A fellow member went to the ATM shortly after his arrival (do they really have a ATM at the 7-11) and tried to retrieve money from it. After a few frightening moments he was surprised his card was actually returned.

Paying your bills is actually very easy. Just go to an ATM and transfer. 2 minute work.

Lucky you, these days, you won't be able to open an account at Bangkok Bank without a work permit.

You still can BK. For just a simple savings account in THB with a Visa-debit/ATM card, you do not need to have a work permit.

However, you need to be introduced to the bank by someone who is acceptable to them (a BG will probably not do unless she is has been a long term BB customer). Who will be acceptable? When I opened my account 8 years ago the country manager for our Thai operations was more than enough.

They also want letters from an entity registered in Thailand introducing you as well as a letter from your foreign bank. These last two are new requirements that were not asked from me 8 years ago.

In summary, you can still open a savings account at Bangkok Bank if you are a tourist. Just bring a letter from your bank, and the rest you can sort it while in LOS.

Edit: I remember now that 5 years ago I opened a savings account at Siam Commercial Bank. It was even easier than Bangkok Bank as I just walked in by myself -no need to be introduced by anyone- with my passport (no work permit required) and opened the account.... which by the way, I do not use at all -probably the account has been deactivated since then.

Two years ago, I had a friend who wanted to open a savings account, we tried several banks. Most of them asked if he had a work permit. He did get an account finally, at Kasikorn.

I am not sure of this, but maybe there is some restriction with BB as to the branches where you can do it.... like for example the branches where you can go buy FX to order a wire transfer from Thailand. For instance BB you cannot do it at the Emporium branch, but you can do it at Suk 43.

Actually, I was wrong before. Nothing has changed since I opened the account. They do not require so many things; just one of them. I had not noticed the word "OR" when looking at the list. Even your passport and a driver's license showing address is enough. Or else just being introduced by an acceptable local or a current customer is enough.

Just make a printout from BB's own website and bring it along.

Below I copy and paste from BB's website:

"If you are living in Thailand temporarily or you are a tourist, you need to bring your passport and the following required documents:
* A letter of recommendation from a person acceptable to Bangkok Bank such as a Bangkok Bank staff, a respected customer of Bangkok Bank, a respected university teacher, a respected company director or senior executive, prepared as Bangkok Bank's letter of recommendation form, as well as the person's a certified true copy of identification document e.g. ID card or government official ID card (Download Form 674 KB) ; or
A letter of recommendation from a reputable organization located in Thailand such as an embassy or an international organization (Download Form 177 KB) ; or
A letter of recommendation from your bank abroad, acceptable to Bangkok Bank, sent to Bangkok Bank via SWIFT
(Download Form 958 KB) ; or
Your driving license containing your photo

If the required document does not specify your c address, you will need to submit additional documents containing your name and contact address as follows:

A bank statement; or
A residential lease agreement; or
A facilities bill; or
A certificate of property ownership (e.g. certificate of condominium unit ownership) "

For Americans, the U.S. Embassy has a form that you can obtain. They run a quick background check, then notarize this form. The form is acceptable to Bangkok Bank. I now have about five friends who have recently opened bank accounts using the embassy form.

Success for opening an account depends on the branch. If one branch refuses, try another one.

This happened to me with Kasikorn, one branch required work permit and did not want to give in, another one (behind Indra Regent hotel) opened an account without even mentioning the work permit. Just make sure that you have a Thai address (an address of your hotel is enough).

Generally the requirement for opening a SAVINGS account and obtaining an ATM card is a pulse beat.

I have had a number of them over the past 30+ years and have never been asked for a work permit.

It is my understanding you would need a WP to open a checking account only.

I know difinative answer is ambiguous, but has any member recently opened a current account without work permit. I own condo, but am not resident, and am fed up with transfering money from overseas for expenses, which costs transfer fees and I also loose out on exchange rate.

I have a savings account at Bangkok Bank (held for many years), and really need an account that can be serviced by internet to make payments out of to other Thai accounts when I am not around. Last visit I tried Siam Commercial, but after waiting nearly an hour to see someone, I walked out.

Any pointers really appreciated.

You might try Bank of Ayudhya. I have been paying my electric and water bills on automatic withdrawal for several years.

Again, this is a savings account, not a checking account.
