Personally I wouldn't go and work in Thailand unless I could make a big salary where I could put money aside for retirement. I can get plenty of P4P in Bahrain and Dubai and I usually come to Thailand 3 or 4 times a year and still save 40-50k US a year.
Now it all depends on your situation but if I was stuck in farangland and not saving anything well then I can see that you may as well live in Thailand and enjoy yourself and not save any money.
Everyones situation is different.

Let us know how you are doing. Not sure what's better - 60 days at 1k per day budget, or 15 days at 4k per day.
I know I always budget a minimum of 4k per day, and I seem to be doing okay. Can't see myself comfortably living on less than that, at least during a vacation trip.
Granted, staying in an apt, or upcountry in a cheaper hotel, apt, or with family would probably shave a bit of that off, but as ThaiUp pointed out - much can be solved, or made more comfortable with money in LOS, and I certainly prefer having the right tools along

I did learn one thing in the few years I spent around the world: smart & hard workin ppl can make a good livin regardless the location or the conditions they are!
Thailand is not an exception.....but of course, if you devote most of your time caring of cute butts walking around you, then less time for biz, so less money for fun!
It's kinda vicious circle in which man has to find out the right balance.....

I would think the trick would be to work for an American companies Thailand Branch office, many major companies like Cisco and IBM have offices in Thailand. Learn Thai and look for a transfer?
I see more then a few S600s and 911 Turbos in Bangkok, so someone is making OK money?
These cars cost over $100,000 here in the US. So there must be a few making 1,000,000+ TB/month, what jobs do they have?

If you see that kinda car driven in asia, it's mostly entrepreneurs or rich sons/daughters. Those people don't have a "job" (at least not working 9 2 5)

It is wrong to believe that all jobs here are badly paid.
For instance in the stockbroking business (as opposed to the boiler rooms) virtually all farangs earn over US$100k per year and the top guys will receive US$200-US$500k per year. There is also a fairly good chance that this salary is virtually tax free - as payment is mostly offshore.
Oh and those 911s and S600s cost over US$250k here.

You'd think that, yes. My personal research into the matter indicates that the multinational corporations (IBM, Motorola, etc) requires you to accept local pay grade if you transfer. They feed you a line about how it's standard practice to have to take a cost-of-living adjustment pay cut.
Certainly, it's all about what you negotiate. But unless you have a skill that they desperately need in Thailand, why would they ever pay you more than a Thai?
Nevermind the fact that they'd prefer to hire locals in the local economy. They know you won't be happy taking a huge pay cut. Whereas the Thai would probably be quite pleased at what they could make.
To management, it's all about head count. Most people are ultimately faceless drones within the machine, no matter how good you are at your job.
