I would think the trick would be to work for an American companies Thailand Branch office, many major companies like Cisco and IBM have offices in Thailand. Learn Thai and look for a transfer?
You'd think that, yes. My personal research into the matter indicates that the multinational corporations (IBM, Motorola, etc) requires you to accept local pay grade if you transfer. They feed you a line about how it's standard practice to have to take a cost-of-living adjustment pay cut.

Certainly, it's all about what you negotiate. But unless you have a skill that they desperately need in Thailand, why would they ever pay you more than a Thai?

Nevermind the fact that they'd prefer to hire locals in the local economy. They know you won't be happy taking a huge pay cut. Whereas the Thai would probably be quite pleased at what they could make.

To management, it's all about head count. Most people are ultimately faceless drones within the machine, no matter how good you are at your job.

I know some multinationals that pay more than USA based salary they call it hardship pay plus cover:

Housing
2 Cars with drivers one for the wife
School tution

It is quite the windfall for the select few.

I pity the corporation who think their branch offices can run with an all Thai staff, quality usually goes down the toilet. It takes a year or two to realize the ship is sinking, but by that time it is the Titantic.

I agree with TU.

Many MNC's are complaining that their processes and training are not taking hold overseas -especially in India. I had a 9 hour delay in the Business Lounge in New Delhi a few months ago - with my strong NY accent - I asked "anyone want to talk outsourcing?" 5 guys pulled up their chairs - 2 from Financial Institutions, One Insurance and the other 2 were Technical. All shared the same issues - training, implementation, migration and communications. I asked the basic questions:
Do you have boots on the ground - all said no.
Average migration time - 4-6 weeks, YIKES
I asked how can they expect quality and production after 6 weeks of training and process implementation - they all had fear in their eyes.

The whole Asian cultural issue of saving face and not communicating a failed process is blackening the eye of outsourcing - yes there are major success stories and they are the MNC's that have boots on the ground and migrate meticulously. I am constantly reading about failed BPO’s and sigh because the failure lies with the Client and the Migration Plan.

If you are moving a business from the States you need to train on how to communicate and how to conduct business in the US – expectations must be clear and delivered firmly.
Jeez - I could go on and on its amazing what you learn when you are in-country, its amazing how efficiently inefficiencies are disguised when you manage remotely.
Lot easier to put out a fire when the flame is in spitting distance.

With that said – looking to relocate to LOS/China/Malaysia.

He is mistaken. I know of people who work in BKK for airlines for western-level wages.

The MNC or any business for that matter will pay only if they are reasonably sure of serious return on their investment. By the way, Eastern-European human-resource investments have gone to the crapper as well. Business ethic (laugh all you want) is practically non-existent, neither the desire to acquire some...

The trick is not to work for a local company unless you can really deliver and are interested in being shat on later. This applies to those who want to earn huge bucks. Those happy with 30k/mth need not worry so much.

Foreign companies tend to have hiring policies related solely to expatriate staff becuase there is a world market in staff and they will be hiring them for a reason. It could be expertise, could be communication skills, could just be because they do not trust anyone but a white face.

My European bosses in my main day job fall into the latter category. I am totally hopeless and unproductive but they keep me on year in and year out feeding me large cheques, bonuses twice a year.

The last time I produced anything I was proud of was 1998.

So what can you expect working for a large European company? Well if you can be treated the same as their home nationals the average cost is about 13,000 Euro/mth including all taxes that they pay on your behalf.

About 15% of this disappears in social costs for their home nationals but they have pensions, medical care etc. provided by the State. As a foreigner hired outside Europe you will not be covered by this so why not take the cash equivalent?

They have international schooling for the kids, house or nice apartment furnished and paid for by the company, business class flights for the family's annual vacation, six weeks vacation, generous expenses, car, taxes paid for them, bonuses etc.

A wily non home national may take the view that all this is bollocks and that the money (tax free) is more important.

I guess you can work out for yourself how much that you could negotiate each month and look after your own flights and car and house and your kids education.

Get in touch with headhunters in your industry- take a proactive approach and ask them what expat level positions they're recruiting for in your industry. If it doesn't fit then move on... if it looks good, then go for it. Don't send your resume and cross your fingers.

Expat positions are rarely advertised in the paper- the odds are quite low that for a specialist expat position they're going to find someone in the industry who just so happens to be reading the Bangkok Post that day- so better to go through headhunters.

Cheers!
