Right now I'm a small business owner. It's basically a virtual business as it's internet based and doesn't require my participation in any specific real-world location. Now, if I were to move to BKK. Would registering my business locally allow me to bypass the VISA issues, even if I'm the only employee? And if it does, how much are the income tax brackets in Thailand?

There is no short answer to this.......but to even start a business here you need a large amount of capital to show the government. You could never be the only employee as the business must be partially Thai owned for the initial period....I'm not even sure that it's not even a majority shareholding. As for Work permits...they are becoming increasingly difficult, I've just renewed mine and it was the most difficult yet even though I was only renewing. To maintain a work permit the company must show....success in business being achieved by the individual, a certain number of Thai people employed...etc....too many criteria to mention as I don't apply myself, the company has someone to do it all for me....and they are on holiday at the moment. Suffice to say it's not a simple matter, other members who maybe own businesses instead of being employed by one like myself (and not as lazy as me in maybe sorting some of this out themselves) will know far more about the exact amounts. One thing I do know...is the rules seem to change constantly and be different depending on which official you meet theat day. Get your application 100% the same as before...and they'll find fault....but thats another thread I feel.

Like what Yurune said, there are a lot of procedures to comply in order to get yourself legally working in thailand, I just put the steps in 1,2,3. 1. register your company; 2. get 51% shareholders in thai (can be arranged); 3. incorporate the company; 4. employ 4 thai staff (can be arranged); 5. apply work permit (ratio is 4 thai to 1 foreigner); 6. then u r done! I have friends specializing in doing the above. If u are serious doing that, I can recommend them to you.

Hehe, maybe I can pay a company a small fee to employ me Won't that solve a lot of issues? That should be a funny method to get a visa, get some thais to create a vapor-corporation that employs YOU! That way you bypass most of the hassle, no? They get money for nothing, I get to live without a lot of the overhead required to running a business ...

Another possiblity is to set up a Representative company (assuming you have a company already that needs representation in Thailand). There will be more documentation required in the setting up process, but you get 5 work permits, and you do not need to show any profits, since you are not supposed to make any money at all! Just show 2 million B of money transferred into the company in the first year and 1 million B each year for the subsequent years. http://203.150.20.51/internet/document/h_sec5fin.pdf

bkkz, Now I am a little bit of topic, but you raised a very interesting point. A year ago a few dive shops were closed in Patong and the criteria was just... that the owners were not supposed to make any money with it. Meaning only investments and the transfer of foreign knowledge is allowed? How bizarre!
