I do a lot of international trade between Canada and Thailand and it is now time to start banking in Thailand as I hate carrying around a wad of cash, hopefully some of you can recommend certain banks that are stable and have good backing behind them.

- I have no problems with Siam Commercial -  but suggest you open an account at the Head office of what ever bank you use, as often for some obscure reason [T I T ] you seem to lose a day if funds transferred to a branch.

don't know about Canada but there are Thai banks in the US and I am pretty sure that they have to operate under US rules (federal insurance, etc) .  If so you could use one of them and simply draw the funds in Thailand?

from thebig international ones, you do have standard chartered, hsbc and citibank of course. the local banks that are foreign controlled are thai danu bank controlled by dbs bank from singapore and bank of asia major shareholder abn amro bank from the netherlands. they would all allow you to open savings accounts but not necessarily current accounts. so depending on the business you are plannin to do with them you might be better of as suggest to open an account outside of thailand to facilitate your import/export through them. if it is just for trsnafering money and having atm card any savings account in thailand with a thai bank would be fine with you as the will issue an atm card attached to a savings account so you can refill your amunition at any atm machine in the kingdom.

My question is this...When you open an account with a bank in Thailand, do you need a Thailand-based mailing address or is it cool to use your home address?
I'm thinking about opening an account when I hit LOS later this year to use as a source of spending money to use when I'm there.
Also what are the interest rates like?

most local banks require a visa inside your passport to even open a savings account,
for current accounts, internet banking, foreign exchange accounts and any kind of more sophisiticated banking they require work permit or 3months non-immigrant visa. In any case only consult head quarters, whatever bank you may choose, since they are used to deal with farangs. I recommend Bangkok Bank for its stability, even during the 97 crisis, and Bank of Asia since its international ownership settled some kind of more flexible behaviour towards foreigners. Money laundry is an issue if bigger sums are dealt with, so be prepared to proove where the cash is from.

Have to agree with the advise on Bank of Asia.
Did open accounts with them without visa or any other additional papers. Internet banking also no problem with them.
I personally use the Sukhumvit 25 branch, which is very helpful, and client friendly. Can be busy at times though.
When bringing in large amount of cash, say above USD 10,000.00, you have to sign a form stating that funds are not coming from non-legal sources.
