Does anyone know of companies that will set up mutual funds, retirement plans, etc in BKK?  I am refering to companies such as Merril Lynch, Prudential, Morgan Stanly/Dean-Witter, PaineWeber, etc or the Thai counterparts to these companies.  Also, is it possible to buy American mutual funds in Thailand? (Janus Funds, Vanguard, etc) or do you need to be a US citizen to buy US stock and US mutual funds?  Does Thailand have these mutual fund counterparts of their own and if so what are the popular fund names?  With the economy being down now, I would imagine that this would be a good time to buy.

Thanks

- I'd be very wary re investing in anything based here, the ecconomy down, but has no realistic chance of doing anything but sliding further !! - internal debt is huge, most up-country familes have borrowed the allowed 50,000 bt from the govt, and have no hope of ever paying it back, - plus nowdays not unusual to find highly qualified guys driving cabs ! as to the number of partially finished condos, apartment blocks, industrial sites, offices etc round the country, - that will never be completed, the number would be staggering !  Live here, but invest offshore is the answer in my book -

depends on what nationality you have. in principal it is not easy for a thai national investing abroad. if you are a foreigner residing in thailand you can go to some of the local brokers such as seamico (www.seamico.com) or kgi to open an account. they both will allow you to buy foreign mutual funds as well as their thai counterparts. especially seamico is quite active in offering these. mind you nearly all mutual funds are listed on the stock exchange and some of them are actually aoffering nice discounts to their net asset values.
market wise i do not agree with tpe. yes the economy had some bad times, but current account is dramatically improving, so does unemployment now down below 3% after 5% a year ago and the stock market is on eof the cheapest world wide. allthough it had a nice 30% run already this year in usd terms. still many cheap companies around. before you put your money in overvalued us stocks better go where you get some real growth, return and cheap assets. mening not only thailand but also korea, indonesia and hk.
hope that helps!
