tnr, yes you can get money out of your American ATM card. Just check the reverse of your ATM card to see if they have the PLUS or Cirrus logo.

As for the bank fee, you may have to check with your own bank.

tnr-
FWIW, the Visa Plus systems' apparently has the world wired. Their network is pretty amazing (to me anyway). This last trip I carried a debit card and a credit card, both from the same bank (located in Hawaii), and both (or all my accounts actually) are accessible via the web and my banks online banking feature.

I flew through Tokyo and Taipei airports and used my Visa (CC) at both for snacks. The purchases were posted on my statements when I checked in in LOS. More amazing to me though was the last week, I was having troubles transfering money into this bank from another bank and was monitoring things online. Anyway, one afternoon from Asoke plaza I was in a cafe, checked my accounts, walked a 1/2 block to 7-11, withdrew some funds, walked straight back to the internet cafe (1/2 block) and checked my account (ten minutes have elapsed MAX!) The results? Transaction posted and affirmed.  In conclusion, I'd have to say Visa's got the globe wired.

Plus, I never was hit with a transaction fee, and the exchange rates always appeared very favorable.  One caveat however, there is a great deal of card fraud in S.E. Asia and if your debit card number (just the account number, mind you) gets into the wrong hands any linked accounts can be drained just this fast. Thus, you should plan accordingly. Hope this helps.

Just note that your card MIGHT not work at all atm's.  For whatever reason, my atm card from the U.S. only works at Bangkok Bank.

Hey Bigin! Howzit?
Sorry, but I'm gonna weave off thread here. I was thinking of opening an account there as well, for my long summer stay coming up. Question for you- If you wire funds from one bank to another then is there a transfer charge for that? About how much? Flat fee, or sliding scale?

And also how hard would it be while you were in LOS to wire funds from Kuwait to the LOS account?

At the present If I check the benificiary to except the charge it's $15.00 US. If I except the charge at my end (web site for my bank) it's $10.00 US. As far as I can tell TFB does'nt charge me anything. Since I can do the transfers from the Banks web site it's no problem to do it from LOS. However The weekend in the middle east is thursday & friday. Any transaction after 12 noon thursday kuwait time will not post till sunday as saturday my bank is closed. If I had to since my trips are not a summer time long, i'll just use my card to draw money from the ATM. If I can be of further assistance let me know skip...

I just went to my bank to inquire about transferring funds from my bank to my TGF bank account.  I was told it cost $45 USD per transfer.   Used this forum and found out about MoneyGram.  It only cost $10 USD and the money can be picked up at any MoneyGram office in Thailand.  You give them reference number and ID they give you the money.  The transfer online is availiable in Thailand in less then 10 minutes.

The fee if using a card from another Thai bank is a few Baht (3 if I remember correct). At least if the other Bank is also Thai. I wonder if in the case of a non-Thai bank the charge is higher, or they just keep the fee low but get you on the FX.

MrJoe? are you there? Here! quickly! I found this other thread that is not about privacy issues!
