Recently, the Baht has gone from 42 to 39 baht for a dollar. Anyone have any reports about a decrease in tourism/ effects on the Thailand economy/.... the way that the dollar is going, it could be 30 baht to the dollar by November... then 20 baht to the dollar in December....

the Ä is strong too! as we are witnessing a global US$ weakness due to the very 'capable and competent' US government, there might be some harm to tourism for US american travellers but for the rest of the world it will be just fine or even better, esp. as long as one is european and has Ä!

The US government is deliberately trying to weaken the dollar. A high dollar makes US exports more expensive and reduces US manufacturing jobs. If the economic situation improves and creates more US jobs, the US will allow the dollar to rise. Many currencies are deliberately undervalued by their governments for the same reason, especially China and to a lesser degree Japan. Lowering the currency has the same effect as raising tariffs on foreign imports. The US dollar tends to be naturally overvalued because it is considered a safe haven by foreign investors (even Saddam had a few billion in US currency stashed away in his vaults).

Thai newscasts are having stories that many Thai's are converting to dollars as they think this slide is temporary and with the huge personnal credit bubble being created by easy money loans to consumers that it will burst aka 1997. Anyone agree with this view? Of course on the USA side Bush is running huge deficts to pay for war and tax cuts and allowing a weaker dollar to make exports look better to help the job market. But there are two jobs in this world where you can be completely incompetent and still remain employed... economists and weatherman. So who knows

I definitely think the dollar will rise in a few years when the job situation turns around. I have no idea what the baht will do. The US federal deficit (and the deficit in most US state and city governments) is primarily because US tax revenues are down significantly. The government does not get paid unless corporations and individuals are making money. The losses on the stock market are a big part of the government shortfall in tax revenues.

I have been thinking of not traveling to Thailand this year because of this situation. The Dollar is at 39.5 today and for the last 3 years I have been going there it was between 42.5 to 45. This makes a differance if you spend out a lot on nightlife and other activities.

Heck !! Thailand's the best damm bargin worldwide your gonna get. P4P, lodging, food, and other entertainment is dirt cheap; I'd say 1/2 the cost of many places. Mexico and Southern America will cost more. For $1000 or 40,000 Baht for 10 days bein $100/day you can have real good time anywhere in Thai. Good deals everywhere including BG's; just take the time and choose wisely in LOS.

I'm with you CaptK. I've been coming since 2000 when the baht was 44 to the dollar. I went in June and was dismayed at the 41.5 rate, now its getting too low. The prime minister already told the US that it won't allow the baht below 39, so this should be the lower range for the baht. Along with the APEC clean up, the prime minister wanting Thailand more family friendly, and lost surface to air missiles smuggled in from Cambodia Thailand currently has too many negative "unknown" factors. I'll stay away until things improve. For those that follow currencies the Phillipines and Mexican peso are at lows compared with the dollar and despite a 22% rise this year Brazil is still at historical lows versus the dollar.
