In the process of opening a thai bank account and I want to transfer in money from the UK.  Any ideas for how to get the best rates/lowest fees when wiring cash internationally?

There seems to be 2 types of potential charges, the wire fee (SWIFT transfer fee) which is a set amount depending upon the bank and the exchange rate "adjustment" made within the transfer itself.  The actual transfer fee doesn't worry me so much, since it is always easy to compare this between banks etc. but the exchange "adjustment" (more honestly described as commission maybe) is a big factor.

HSBC have quoted me an effective 3% commission rate (against the commercial exchange rate) for a HSBC to HSBC transfer of several million Baht.  This sounds outrageous to me.  Anyone else tried to transfer reasonably large amounts of funds this way recently at a cheaper rate?

Do not know about BKK but the going rate in Singapore is 1.5%.

A friend of mine in PI transfers money from his various HBSC accounts in NZ, PI, Thailand, and OZ for a flat rate of NZD20 per xfer.  But that is HBSC to HBSC.

That IS outrageous.

I have been using Thai Farmer's Bank now renamed Kaikorn because that have given us the best exchange rate a few tenths of percent. Their customer service sucks so we just keep a Savings account there for incoming wire transfers then move the money to Siam Commercial Bank which has a less favorable exchange rates, but great customer service.

Is that a single fee and then a commercial to commercial exchange rate with no further commission fees?  I am looking to do a HSBC to HSBC transfer, and as I said HSBC UK quoted me 3% + approx £10 SWIFT fee for the transaction.

That is a single fee for HBSC to HBSC, however he uses Internet banking to do it.
