Hello all I have a bank of scotland switch card (UK). Can I use it in BKK? It has no cirrus or plus logo on it, only the switch logo. Has anybody from the uk tried to use a switch card in bkk with only this logo on? does it work?? Also, my visa and mastercards don't have these logos on the back. Will these work? I don't want to use them if I can help it because of the charges. I'm of to bkk next Saturday, last minute decision to go, and I fear I have left it a bit late to sort out the right card to take. Does this mean I have to take alot of currency or travellers chqs?? I hope not!! Thanks in advance!

Mine has the Plus logo on it, but my Uk credit cards, both Visa and Master Card all work ok as well! What I do is bring some cash, and bring a few different cards. I have had had no probs in any of my trips and find that the Switch card charges the less (1%) ish. Like on this trip I have some cash in the room safe just in case, I only go out with one card in my pocket and max say 10K in cash just in case. I am not 100% sure about this but I guess you could go to any major bank here with your credit card and passport etc and get cash, but I guess they would charge a bigger percentage. Just an idea but you could ring your bank and ask them?

Beware when using Maestro/Switch. Unlike credit cards it can be a real pain the the a*** to get a refund if you ever get someone who uses your card details fraudulently. Whilst I have never had this happen to me even with a credit card on many trips to Thailand, why bother running the risk? The only possible reason for using one of these cards I can see is if you dont have a credit card or maybe have maxed it out. Since you get a lousy exchange loading (typically 2.75% charge), immediate debit of your account (rather than a month of free credit) and no useful freebies like airline miles, cashback etc. Despite working in the retail banking industry, the whole concept of Switch/Maestro and Visa Debit cards is (to me) a huge con foisted on the general public to increase banking profits, since for the bank processing costs for these transactions are tiny (in comparison to cheques), your account is debited instantly rather than 3+days after the transaction is made and the foreign exchange fees and cash advance charges compare with the most expensive credit cards. The smart thing to do is to use credit cards rather than debit cards if you are disciplined enough to pay the bill in full each month.
