Hi. I have a US master card with a Cirrus network symbol. What is the maximum amount in THB I can withdraw daily from a Thai bank? What would be the daily withdrawal fee? Thanks. TC.

Some banks in Pattaya will give out 10K at a time. The most I've ever withdrawn is 30K in one day. Thai bank has no charge. My sob of a bank charges $1.75 per transaction.

I think the limit is in regards to the bank that you have the card from. I have 2 Thai cards and on 1 the limit is 40,000, the other is 20 withdrawls per day at the limit of the bank I'm withdrawing from. I have a friend from the states and his limit is $250.00 per 24 hour period

The withdrawal limit per transaction is 20,000 B from the ATM. The daily limit is dictated your bank. Some banks (non-US though) allow up to US$2,000/day. Woo! That's a lot of spending!

My card worked with both Cirrus and Plus networks. I typically could select as much as 30,000TBH on the ATM screen but the transaction would eventually fail with some unknown error if I tried to pull out more than 10,000THB per transaction. However, I could make multiple back-to-back withdrawls for a combined total equivelent to my card's daily limit. Even though I was never charged any fees by the Thai banks, my bank would charge me both for using another bank's ATM and also a currency conversion fee. Of course there are western banks that don't do that and even a few who will refund the fees of other banks. If you process your transaction in English (not a problem with most ATM's in tourist areas) but then get some Thai text just before the money is about to be released, you might want to cancel the transaction. My guess is that text is telling you about one or more fees that are about to be collected. I wish I could confirm this, but I always moved on to another ATM whenever I encountered it.

Also, be advised... that some banks ( mine included) have a limit of $500 a day...I 'd say that is the limit for most banks...and on one of my trips, I arrived on a Friday night, and on Monday, I tried to get cash, but could not. I had plenty of money in the bank, it would not give me any money. Turns out, that it was Sunday in the US, and the bank does not process transactions on Saturdays and Sundays. So, even though I had spent no more than $500 dollars a day, ( I had spent over $500 for three days), I could not get any money. The next day I was able to get some cash out.

Some banks will let you change this amount over the phone, while others will require you to sign a form or few. The daily limit is mainly there for the bank's protection, and not yours.

I always take out about 20k per transaction and never had any probs, as others have said it depends on the limit for the bank with the atm and also the limit from your bank. Consider the foreign exchange fee too. Not sure how this plays in the US, but in the UK you are subject to a 1.5% fee or min £1.50 per transaction just for a cash withdrawal (thus taking out very small amounts doesnt make a lot of sense). On top of the cash advance fee there is a foreign currency loading which varies markedly between banks/card issuers. Ranging from 0% (i.e. true commercial rate, less the cash advance fee) to 2.75% plus. If you make a lot of foreign currency withdrawals or even use your card a lot abroad it is worth seeking out a bank/issue with rates at the lower end of the spectrum (for instance Nationwide in the UK have 0% loading, Frizzel also). Stranegly some of the internet issuers who make a big deal out of low interest rates can have the highest foreign currency loadings (e.g. Egg et al in the UK). Remember VISA and Mastercard actually do the exchange at the commercial rate (much better than tourist rates), the closer you can get to this true commercial exchange rate, the better deal you are getting.

I usually withdraw 19,000 from the ATM, 20,000 exceeds my $500 daily limit. On my last trip I used a Visa card, American Express card, and my ATM card. I compared exchange rates and found that the ATM rate was best, Visa a hair better than American Express rate. I got about 39.5 b/$ from the ATM.
