I keep reading about guys offering tips in LOS. Execpt for loose change when you pay the check bin. STOP WITH THE TIPPING. Thais don't tip and neither should YOU. Ya, that means YOU.
When you agree to a price with a BG. Pay the agreed price and no more.
When you overpay (damm near any price YOU pay your being overcharged) the tut-tut driver don't tip. Same thing with a taxi driver etc, etc.
Do you guys get the drift? Thailand is a non tipping country. Let's keep it that way.

I agree with not tipping a BG, you agree a price that is it, but I can also understand the incentive of dangling a carrot to get a better performance, though I usually find girls are either into it or not, and money doesn't always make the difference, in fact telling them to perform better for cash often reminds them exactly of what they do and some find that insulting.
Taxi drivers are not tipped in Thailand, but I sure as hell am not waiting for anything less than 5B change, it's a waste of my time, and taxi's are so cheap anyway.
FACT! Thai's do tip in restaurants, Thai women do tip in beauty salons. I've watched it for years with my own eyes. They don't sit there with their calculators working out 15%, but they do tip. I always tip a waitress well, hell some of these people (if accommodation is provided) earn as low as 2000B a month, and I certainly will tip for some of the great service I receive in Thailand (note: this is never around Sukhumvit in my book).

I will leave the loose change with maids, waitress, cabbie but I don't leave 10% nor do I give a BG a extra incentive.

Tipping is an individuals choice.
There is a huge difference between the USA and Thailand (and for that between the USA and the rest of the world) about the requested/required tipping policies. In the USA you are expected to tip to the service providing staff so that they have a salary. In Thailand you tip out of appriciation with the service. Nothing is required but it is often appriciated when received. If you are happy with the service, or the staff goes out of their way to accomodate your requests, why not tip? If you think it is worth those few Bath, please do so!
The above is not written with BG service in mind but looking to the service industry as a whole.

Like I have said in the past, I live sort of out in the bonnies and after a night of heavy drinking I just want to get home as fast as possible. So if the driver drives fast, good and shuts the f**k up he gets a big tip. Taxi fare is usually around 180 THB and I pay 300 to a good performer.
Lately, I have been getting good ones. Last Friday I draggedmy ass back home at 4:00 AM. The taxi driver did not say a word and got me home in 20 minutes. 300 THB for him, considering I spent 9000 THB that night it was chump change, but made his day.
Now for the drivers who complain all the way home, so far, I'm missing fares. I give just the exact amount.
Don't worry BigD I do not go to Patayya much so your stomping grounds are safe from us big tippers.

leaving a tip for the waitress or a cab driver, around 10 to 20 baht, is a good idea, because they dont make much money.
if a bg was especially good, I give her 100 baht taxi money over the agreed amount.

Did the US become a tipping nation because of foreign tourists? Of course not, and neither will Thailand. It's amusing to think that we could have so much influence, but I seriously doubt that Thais base their culture and financial codes on what a few farangs do or don't do. If Thailand becomes a tipping nation, it won't be because of us. Tipping is something we all have to decide for ourselves, and I think most Thais understand why we tip. When I tried to tip a girl who knew it was my last day in Thailand, she refused the tip explaining that there's no point since I can't benefit from it on a future visit.
Now, if you really and truly want to visit a "non tipping country" try Japan. Average Japanese will likely be confused, embarrassed, or even insulted by a public offer of cash for service. Too bad it doesn't apply to the P4P scene, but that's not exactly a public service and most of those girls aren't Japanese anyway.

Tip or don't: it's up to the individual despite what you may read on the internet. But 20 baht is enough for almost anything a non-professional does for you. If you want to tip your doctor or lawyer, send him whiskey.
The only thing I would dare ask anyone to do is to fight back against the bad bars that send your change back as coins when bills would make more sense. Example: your bar bill is 170 and you pay with 500, then your change comes back as 3 x 100's banknotes and 3 x 10's coins.
With me, this results in no tip, whereas if the last 30 baht had come back as a 20 baht note and a 10 baht coin, the tip might have been 20 and would at least have been 10. Homey don't play dat...
Breaking the last 20 into two coins (20 back from a 180 bill paid with 200), that I don't mind.

I agree with V-J. It annoys me when they give me back extra coins (instead of 20s). Sometimes they do overdo it. Luckily this bad habit seems to happen only at go-gos.
