The nosediving dollar got me thinking that it might be better to take Euros or Pound Sterling along on my next LOS trip. Last time I was there (Oct '03), I remember the Baht climbing against the Dollar every time I cashed in, and each time I'd kick myself for not converting more at the previous higher rate.

Any advice on how easy it is to convert Euros to Baht and the several currency exchanges along Suk? I usually use the one right next to the Landmark entrance when I'm staying there. Should one take some greenbacks along, just in case?

I posted back in 2002 after a trip to BKK that I had the following experience:

I bought USD at London Heathrow to have some ready cash and with the intent on surviving on the ATM if needed. In BKK all the money exchangers and the desk in the hotel refused to chage USD bills issued in 1989 or earlier. Incidentally in the batch of notes I had gotten there were quite a few of them. The explanation I got ( I even enquired with the hotel management - Amari Boulevard) was that the THai Central Bank did not accept them for security and tracking reasons. The only thing I could do was to use them as exhcange for TG LT service. In many bars they will accept USD and TG's in my experience take them after LT if you have no Baht.

I largely survived on using my CC at the ATM.

I am getting old usd notes sometimes.

kasikorn bank takes them and put the baht on my account I have with them.

so if there would be a problem with the money. they would notify me and take the baht off my account again.

so far it always worked.

Euro is easy to change as long as you do NOT have
500 € notes. Those are usually refused even in Europe anyway!
Now 1 euro is approx 50 baht.

I travel a lot on business, and I never change money into the local currency, I go to a local (in country) ATM and withdraw some.

If your regular cash card has the maestro or cirrus symbol, it should work in most ATMs. The only country I have ever had problems is Japan, where CitiBank is the only one to accept foreign banks accounts.

There are ATMs at BKK Airport, as you enter the public area, on the left.

If you feel more comfortable carrying a hard currency, I would take your home one, otherwise you are going to be stung for 2 exchange transactions.

Agreed jnr

Certainly if travelling from a euro or GBP orrigin there is no need to take two exchange hits.

this is not quite the whole story

the 1989 100 dollar bill was one of the worlds most forged banknote hence nobody will generally touch them

Mr Alan
The US currency has recently been modified again to increase security. The new $20 bills were issued just a few months ago and the new $100's are probably not far behind. So be prepared to get rid of any pre-2004 US currency when the new $100's are issued. The most noticeable change to the casual viewer is the addition of multiple colors on the front of the bills. There are some other security features that bank tellers will look at.
