A friend has e-mailed me from BKK complaining about the Thai banks not giving good interest rates for Farangs and Farangs with Thai wives. Surely a bank cannot discriminate an interest rate because of nationality. Maybe I have the details wrong but my friend is definitely upset about something!
There is some restriction about to be introduced for Farang Bank account holders and Thais with Farang husbands.
Sorry about being a bit vague on the detail?
Does anybody know any more about this?

Yes, of course then can! Just as bar owners can ban people of certain nationalities or race.
In the Netherlands you pay higher transfer rates if
you're not a resident.

It seems to be one of those issues popping up so once in a while. I belief it was approx 2 years ago when the Phuket Gazette noticed same in front page article. After some research the found out that only 1 bank was continiously paying the correct interest rate. This was Bank of Asia. At that moment all major banks declared that they would investigate and correct this 'misunderstanding' with their farang customers. Since I always have been customer of BOA I never bothered to see what the outcome was of those investigations. But, it is definately not a new thing! TIAT.

This is what I have heard. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this information
"Apparently there is to be no further interest payments to bank accounts held by Farangs. Thais married to Farangs can not get credit from banks."
Whether all banks and all accounts is meant is not clear.
However I would ask what has prompted this march towards Xenophobia?
Historically it has been an element in dictatorial regimes.

I still receive interest payments over my savings account. Can not comment about the loans to Farang. It sounds rather unlikely that Thai (being married with a farang or not) will be disadvantaged by any bank.

thais and even farangs can get credit by thai banks! about the deposit rates I donno as I rather invest my money into the nightlife as keeping it in the bank!

So Herman, where is your friend getting this info, newspapers, bank brochures ???? if you are in contact with him to get half arsed info, why not ask him for the source of it so that someone here can actually look into its reality. If and its a big IF, it is true, then someone should start a website on the crap of thailand and see what the government thinks of some wide spread international critcism to the general public.
