In North America the standard for a tip in a restaurant is 15-20% of the final bill, is that the same "rule of thumb" in Thailand? You hate to be cheap but also hate to over-tip and ruin a good thing by having everybody expect a BIG tip. Also who do you tip, over here we tip, --restaurant workers, --chambermaids (sometimes), --beauty stylists, --door-man, --taxi drivers, A lot of North Americans expect a tip and get pissed off when you do not tip, but isn't a tip supposed to be for exceptional service and not something that is just given for no reason??????

Tipping in Thailand is not expected, but appreciated.. for most if you don't tip, there will not be a problem.. esp true at the stalls on the road, etc.. even more true as you get up country. In a restaurant if they charge a 10% gratuity on the bill, don't tip any more unless you got some special service and then hand the money to the person that provided the service .. B40 is a big tip in most cases. where they don't add the 10% then leave maybe B20-40 baht.. if you want to money to go just to your server hand it to them, otherwise it gets shared or kept by the owner/manager !!! Maids in your hotel, no tip necessary, but when I used to stay in hotels, I would find the maids and give them B20 each the first day and tell them I wanted extra towels .. if you are doing mulitiple girls you don't want to hand them a used towel.. so I used to get four towels rather than two a day .. if I stayed for more than a week, I renewed the tip each week .. other than that, leave a few baht, but not necessary.. I used to leave my small collection of satangs and one baht coins. taxis, no tip necessary, but as I rule, I give B40 for rides up to B40, B50 for rides up to B50, etc .. small change for me and it avoids hunting for coins or even carrying coins .. just as a note, getting and carrying B50 notes is a good idea.. they make good tips in bars.. B20 is kind of cheap and B100 sometimes too much. Hair stylists .. you must still have hair ;-0.. not necessary, but an extra B20 would be appreciated.. esp if she is cute and you might like to take her to dinner sometime?? Doorman.. bell boy.. not necessary, but I usually gave the guy who carried my bag to my room B10-B20 depending on if I had change.. not so much per bag as in the USA. In my apt, even tho it is not something done by Thais or most farangs, I have given a tip at the end of the year to the night guard and the cashier/asst mgr... I give them a new year's card and B500 each.. they are very nice and thru the year have done favors for me.. the night guard is a really nice guy.. he always gets up and opens the door for me and stays awake all night which means the building is much more secure.. at one apt I used to stay at I used to come in about two or three and he would be sound asleep and anyone could get in the building.. a couple of times I had girls pounding on the door about four am as they needed some money and thought I might be interested .. Servers in bars.. not necessary, but if you go to the bar regularly it does help.. be careful with those damn big bars.. they will bring your change and perhaps B50 in B10 coins.. hoping you will just pick up the bills and leave the rest .. I never leave more than b10 on the tray .. If a girl has sat with me and I like her I will give her anywhere from B40 to B100 .. even if I have bought her a drink .. sometimes if the girl is known to me I will ask them if they want a ladydrink or the cash (you can guess what the answer is) .. this works well as they don't have to have a small coke and you give them B80 or so and come out even.. perhaps ahead as she doesn't ask for drink number two ... If I am going into a bar that is one where the girls mob you.. I will sometimes find the mamasan first and give her B100 and tell her that I don't want to be bothered with all the girls.. that way I can look over the girls in peace and quiet and then select one (when she finishes dancing, not before) so that I can have her with me for more time for the drink .. again if you know the bar, just ask for a girl you like and have her take care of shooing all the hangers on away.. another thing that works if a crowd appears as you walk in.. pick one you like and whisper in her ear.. "I will buy you a drink, but not all the others, get rid of them" and she will .. some of the girls will moan, but they get over it .. More guys overtip in bars than undertip.. you don't have to tip much unless you want to .. In the USA, tips were to insure prompt service, but most people who work in jobs where tipping is a big deal often make only minimum wage and the tipping is where they make their money .. There are some real problems when people come from other countries and don't tip.. the service people often get really rude and aggressive.. In large expensive restaurants I never tip more than 15% as that is adequate for the server.. think about it.. you are paying $150 for dinner (or more) and the server spends no more than 15 minutes with you .. that means that $22.50 for 15 minutes of service .. plenty in my opinion .. most servers will have 3-5 tables and make a lot of money in the good places .. In small joints where breakfast is $5 or so, I usually leave them $1-2 .. hell they work hard for their money and I would rather be more generous with someone making US20-30K than someone making $50K+++ there are waiters in top restaurants making over $100K and much of that is not taxed !!!

I found in Thailand (or anywhere I've been in Asia) that there was no pressure on me to tip, and whatever I did leave was greatfully received. Whereas in the states, I really felt very pressured to leave a minimal of 15%.... and when I didn't like the service and left much less than was expected.... they looked really pissed off about it. Oaktoad, very helpful reply !!

As for the girlie bars I am always leaving the coins I get back. Did you notice that some of the change is always consisting of coins... 555...! If I like the BG I was with I leave a tip of Baht 20 or sometimes more in her bra or panty.

some of the bars?. most of them i go in do that. but they soon realise that if they give me 40 Baht in coinns i will always take it,but if they give me 20 in coins and 20 in notes,i leave the coins. i don't mind tipping, but feel if all the change is all in coins, they are taking the piss. they know that many people will leave them.

In the US, I tip 10% except in a small breakfast place I tip a buck. If your not happy with the service don't stiff em. Leave 2 cents that lets the person know what you thought of their "service". I have only had to do that once and she throw the 2cents at me I picked it up and put in my pocket.

Last June I was at a bar in Phuket, Soi Eric I think. At the end of the night my tab was about 500 Bt. When I paid the full amount with no tip, the bitch behind the bar demanded a tip by screaming "What.....no tip!!!", she then displayed a real attitude problem. I reckon she figured I was a newbie and was testing me out. F**k her I thought, so I grabbed my cutie from the bar and took her straight back to my hotel for some horizontal folk dancing.

if my bill is a round figure, that's it for me. but i don't think i've ever seen a bill which is an exact round figure. i find they all require giving of change, tempting you to leave the change. my bar in soi Eric,is fair, but 90 for a beer, coke etc,but 120 for a LD. takes a bit of working out to buy the right amount of different drinks to get an exact figure.
