Guys, need your help. Where is the Citibank located in BKK and/or elsewhere in Thailand; and, can one use Citibank card to withdraw cash at any other ATM in Thailand (e.g from Krung Thai's ATM or Bangkok Bank's ATM etc). Thanks in advance.

You should be able to use your USA ATM card at most (if not all) of the ATM's in BKK. Citibank does have a presence in BKK but it is primarily commercial banking and credit cards (although they do offer retail banking). I think they have only one location (or at most a very few) in BKK. Probably the best way to bring cash to LOS is to get travelers checks, especially if you can get them for free or a small fee. Travelers checks actually have the best exchange rate, because there is less chance of counterfeits. Your bank will charge a fee for ATM currency exchange (over and above the exchange rate), plus your bank will probably charge a fee for using a different bank's ATM. Credit cards also get hefty fees tacked on for using in different currency. Also keep in mind that many hotels will try and charge you a 5% fee for using a credit card (even though it is technically illegal), so I just bring travels checks, which can be cashed at any of the many banks around town (always bring your passport with you to cash travelers checks). Here is the Bangkok location for Citibank: http://www.citibank.com/locations/ap/th/th/bangkok/citibank_tower.htm

I have a Citibank ATM card and I had no problems using it in BKK & Pattaya ATMs. You can go to the Citibank website and they have their ATM/branch locator page. When I last checked it in Feb '04, they only had one location in BKK so for convenience sake, just use it at other ATMs. I find it much easier than bringing traveler's checks.

Does anyone know the issues involved with opening a CitiBank account in the US and then accessing the funds in Thailand. Would this be more cost effective than requesting a wire transfer from a US bank, for anyone contemplating a long time stay in Thailand.

I know that you can get a Citibank checking account in Thailand in either baht or dollars. If you did that, it would probably be easy to transfer from a US Citibank account to a Thailand Citbank account. Obviously, you would need to contact them for confirmation on that. However, since you are Marxist and don't believe in private property, you should transfer the funds to my account.
