Is there American express office in Bangkok and Pattaya to exchange the checks without the fee that exchange booths charge? I was just curious as I know that banks and currency exchanges charge 30 some baht fee. I was planning on having a lot of checks with me. If so is that exchange rate as good as the bank? I know I should try me visa card. All replies will be greatly appreciated.

Is it really worth wasting time and effort (in the hot weather) to go out of your way to save 33 baht per traveler's check? Why don't you just take US$100 TCs? Cashing 2 or 3 a day should be more than enough for spending money. I think there are US$500 denomination TCs.

Mr Alan
For the best exchange rates and lowest fees, go inside one the many large banks on Sukhumvit (or some place close to where you are staying). Don't forget to bring your passport, which is required to cash TC's.

American Express does have 2 "Foreign Exchange Service" locations at the airport, but I doubt the exchange rate is as good as a large bank on Sukhumvit. I don't even know if they waive the 30 baht fee per check.

There are a few other AMX Travel Service locations (not owned by American Express but operating under license from them), but again, I doubt you will get the best combined exchange rate/fee at these places.

Go to a bank as everyone has suggested. I would recommend the Bank of Bangkok, who seem to have a computerized link into AMX to verify that the TC’s are not stolen, which results in less hassle when you cash the checks. Get the TC's in $100 denominations.

You might also want to consider staying at home to save extra money. That way you won't have to worry about those absolutely extortionate TC conversion charges.

I also find that discarded potato sacks, carefully sown together and with holes cut out for your head and arms, make excellent garments.

If you'd like some more handy money saving hints, please pm me (it's free!).

On september 17,2004 Thai military bank at the airport was giving a higher exchange rate for $100 travelors checks than for $100 cash. Like 41.96 versus 41.44 for cash. No fee for travelors checks either. I don't normally carry travelors checks. I looked specifcally becuase people are always debating the issue. Maybe different at other banks/locations but
