Can anyone give me some info about the Thai lottery, I heard from another forum there is a legal and non legal lottery running in LOS.
This has got me totally confused.
I understand that you do not pick out 6 numbers like we do in the UK with 3 being a small payout and 6 being the jackpot.
What do you do pay 20 baht for each unit and have as many units as you wish?
As I say guys if anyone can give me the rundown I feel lucky, I read my horoscope in the local newspaper and it says I am gong on a long journey, meet a princess and become rich, which means I will need to win some lottery money to pay for flight home after TG has cleaned me out

Well, the illegal lottery works like this; After you have bought your official legal lottery ticket you bring it to the black market guy where you will again bet on the number you´ve bought. This time though you will bet 200 or 2000 baht instead of 20 baht on the number and of course if your number comes up in the state lottery your "black" earnings will be that much greater.
At least that is how I remember one of my girlfriends explained it 15 years ago. Now I´m drunk mates..

OK, there are now 2 legal lotteries, and the underground lottery.
Goldsmith is sort of right, and sort of not right 
The main legal one is a weekly draw, with lots of numbers; the tickets are several digits, and if you see the vendors on the streets, they have the numbers already on sale; you have to see whether they have your "lucky numbers" or not - most Thai people only care about the last 2 or sometimes 3 numbers, so they buy like 28 (and usually 82 at the same time). You can buy one ticket with that number, or the whole block.
I think if the last 2 numbers come up, which is the main chance to win, then you get about 2,000b; so if you have bought 20 tickets then you'd get 40,000b. I think the tickets are 40b for single 80b for a double, but the independent people selling them on the street are onselling them, so they could be sold sometimes for 50/100b or the like.
The other option is that at some places which I haven't ever bothered to check, you can buy tickets and choose your own numbers, mostly to play the last 2 or 3 numbers of the lottery. Have little idea how it works, but it is going head to head with the underground lottery, which is around 8-9 times bigger than the legal lottery, by some estimates. Somehow, the odds of this lottery are supposedly better than the odds of the lottery I just described. Since I don't play the lottery (although my uncle has won over a million baht b4 on the lottery), I am not exactly sure. I think they use a different draw, and for some reason a lot of doubles have been coming up: 88, 44 etc - since Thai people like to play the 28:82 type combination or 19:91; doubles are better for the lottery operators - who knows whether you can put anything on that.
For the underground, they use exactly the same numbers as the legal lottery. It is illegal, and controlled at several levels by mostly police and mafia. There are a few senior politicians I know of with solid connections to the underground lottery. They use the same numbers as per most underground lotteries in USA, NZ, Australia, etc. Just different payout schedules and also they offer credit to some customers. The underground players mostly play the last 2 sometimes 3 numbers.
Bets in the underground lottery can be for almost any amount, so are not in units of 40b/80b - a while back a gang tried to rig the numbers of the genuine lottery with some massive bets on the underground lottery. They were caught.
You dont need to play the legit lottery, to play the underground. You just need to know and trust a local bookie. Usually the local bookie will have insured or backed up their numbers with a larger bookie and so on and so on; in case the good numbers come up, and someone gets the 3 digit number with a 10,000b bet on.
Should you play the underground? No - if you don't know what you are doing you'll get conned/not paid out/etc - you are dealing with criminals and mafia guys who are not nice people at all.
The legit lottery has a big house edge; but at least some of the proceeds go to charity stuff. The numbers are sold by the vendors, who also sell the winning numbers from the week b4 on a sheet; those numbers get printed in the newspaper and are on TV too.
Go for it; you've got a better chance if you invest in the stockmarket; casino or whatever, but I won't stand in your way of riches. In fact, give me 50% of your winnings na krub Khun PEE!!!

My missus plays a local illegal lottery based on the last 2 digits on the SET ticker tape on Chong ITV, she has had a couple of good wins, 10k here and 20k there, plus we do the real lottery too.

I had not heard of that one!! I thought most people just gambled on KTB shares and Natural Park
The key for any underground lottery is for the bookie not to be selecting the numbers themselves; then they can claim to be open and honest.
There are some big time websites in UK now allowing betting on pretty much everything. You should tell your missus about some of them.
