i will be moving to the land of smiles in september. i just returned from a trip july 8 and loved it. I have a thai chick that i spent a week or so with that has said that she will quit work when i return. while i am somewhat apprehensive about her true intentions and i know that she is pursued by a brit, i don't really care as long as she toes the line while i am there. I have not engaged in any sponsership nor has she asked and she has called me 3 or 4 times since i got back. so i feel that my chain is not getting yanked too hard. i'm looking for advice on housing furnished vs non furnished apartments and any input on thai language schools and any advice on shit to do when i get bored of bars beers and temples as i expect to remain in bkk for some time while in school.

Shit I would like those answers too. I know it depends on your budget as far as apartments;( say why do they call them apartments if they're all stuck together?), but anyway. If you need a place big enough for two and so on. Maby 10k per month- not sure.

Taek your time getting a place.. do not, I repeat, do not let your "chick" move in right away .. you will lose all freedom and perhaps have other problems as well.. there are many apts for B10K or less.. almost all are partly furnished (bed, wardrobe, perhaps a table and chairs) .. refrig is optional (buy don't rent if you are there for a year or more) .. TV they will rent.. same advice .. Most farangs like being near BTS .. make sure you check this out.. some places are a long, long way out and take f_cking forever to get to NEP, etc.. you are looking for input on language schools.. to teach or to learn thai?? İ for jobs try this url İhttp://teach-in-thailand.com/ If you want to learn Thai, try AUA for their sort of immersion classes.. personally, I like just having a walking dictionary around and take notes.. use your own phonic system as many of those that exist will drive you nuts (e.g. "or" is "aw" İmakes no f_cking sense) .. I kept a notebook .. also there are some good books.. one called teach yourself thai is quite good. Once you get a bit advanced then get a tutor for a couple days a week for about B300 an hour or so, get a University grad with a masters in either education or English from the States. Good luck.. İ

A couple of hints (and yes, this is definitely the wrong place, but it might stay here or maybe BK will move elsewhere):
- If you can hack it, learn the Thai alphabet. İThis will hold you in good stead later when you can read signs, menus, etc. İAnd over the long run it will make learning to speak Thai easier, as you can then use Thai English dictionaries. İThai script is the only way to go regards phonetic pronounciation, everything else is just a poor guess.
- Ditto what brother Oaktoad said about having a girl move in right away. İDon't let any girl move in unless you plan to marry her or live with her forever. İAnd even then I'd give it second thoughts. İBecause if it doesn't work out there is a good chance you'll have to move.
- I'd even be careful about bringing girls back to your place if you plan to have a long term relationship. İBecause whoever you end up with will, in the end, be privvy to all the information from everyone who works near your home. İRemember farangs (assuming you aren't of Asian descent) stick out like a sore thumb in BKK. İSometimes you even get credit for things you didn't do because you look like someone else. İ
- Traffic in BKK can be just stupid. İYou didn't come to Thailand to sit in traffic. İSo figure out where you will work/study, then get a place nearby. İAccess to the Skytrain (BTS) is key as well, since you can get to Nana and Soi Cowboy both quite easily by Skytrain, as well as other key places. İOnly drawback there is that it closes at midnight, but then the traffic isn't bad then and you taxis are dirt cheap.

I agree with seubeu (does that mean tiger, floor mat or shirt??) .. if you have the energy learn to read thai.. writing it is not as important .. I can read some and it does help if you are trying to figure out where you are and the signs are all in thai .. it is not as hard to learn as you might think.. I used flash cards and that helped a lot .. had to make my own, but you might find them somewhere... did cards for letters of the alphabet and then did cards with simple words .. Oh, and I knew I had another url for you.. couldn't find it earlier... http://www.ajarn.com/ ajarn is the thai word for a university teacher .. "kru" is like a grammar/high school teacher .. and those that have Phd's, well they get called "herr doctor"

Sorry about that, I noticed a malformed post on the last 25 post as well. As for learning how to write, learn this as well, learn how to write your name in Thai upside down. This will really impress the hell out of that girl. I have only met ONE Thai girl that can write her name upside down, she was the one who inspired me to learn and have not anyone else so far.

Youngexpat, Hmmm I found a cheap place near Ratchatewi BTS station (one stop far from SIAM) right beside the Asia Hotel....TB/. 7,000/month. There are other similar decent apartments available for 11-12K at a place called Pathumwan House which is right opposite MBK few yards away from the BTS "National Stadium"...... ....and yes....There are many other palces to stay throughout the BTS line for all sort of budgets.... However, I agree with the brother who recommend you to NOT bring the girl back to your place very early unless you want to stick with her for a loooooong time. If this TG will moves in few weeks later you will find one afternoon that her mother/sister/brother or friends are "visiting" her for a while or maybe one night you will get a ruckus because one of "her" friends saw you hanging around Beer Garden or flirting at CM2. You will be lucky if the relatives don't ask you to cover some expenditures or something else....and the list goes on. I SAW it, this is just an advice. ....and yes, we have to learn Thai....that's certainly a plus. Good luck!!

Youngexpat, Take note of the good advice here from the brosÖespecially about moving your TG in with you. I wish had this sort of advice when I first arrived here. Iíve had a few live-ins over the past 10 years and with each one Iíve no idea how she became a permanent fixture in my apartment. It just sort of happensÖone day they start cleaningÖleave a few clothes in the wardrobe for convenience and then thatís itÖyour whole life has changed. And thatís the easy partÖthe fun and games really start when you try and get them out.
