As I haven mentioned before I plan to relocate to Bangkok next year. I would like to bring most of my funds via certified check. I hope to bring about 10 grand to get started. If I do bring a certified check or set of smaller certifed checks what kind of time can I expect before I will have access to the funds if I open up a bank account? Are some banks quicker then others? Thanks

Why so much headache for only 10K?? You could bring them in,cash change the money in lots of places and deposit the bath when you open up a bank account, which you can do in a few minutes

Put the money in a building society and use an ATM card. Can't remember/don't know what the Woolwich currently charge but as of about a year ago it was one of the cheapest options. Certainly the easiest.

Another way: Bring $6000 cash and a $4000 certified check. Open the account with the cash and than deposit the certified check into your new Thai account. The certified check should clear in a couple of weeks.

Uncertified checks (personal checks) take around 6 weeks (45 days) to clear. Not sure about certified (bank) checks. Should be done faster. Also, understand that without a work permit your choice of banks will be limited.

I opened an account in a Bangkok Bank agency (no work permit, just my passport was required). I still have a bank account in France too. I usually send a fax to my bank in France and they transfer money directly to my thai bank account. The money is then available in less than one week (usually 3 or 4 days after my fax was sent).

If you plan to wire funds into your Thai account at later dates on multiple occasions (as FG is doing), you will need to sign a wire transfer agreement with your U.S. bank before leaving the States. U.S. banks that I know of will not accept a faxed instruction with a faxed signature unless they have a wire transfer agreement with an original signature on file.

Certified checks, business checks, butt special wiping checks are all treated like personal checks. Thai banks will be very adverse to opening an account with you based only on a certified check. It may take over 2-months to clear. If you bring a certified check, you'll end up mailing it back home to be deposited. <<burp>>
