Hi I was thinking about changing 1000 USD to baht before going to Thailand. Its currently at 1 dollar = 42 baht right now. I remember in the past it was as low as 38.

I'm going in November this year so wondering if I should take advantage of this.

Can I exchange for Thai baht at major US banks?

thanks,
C

I think Thai baht will continue to fall. I would wait to convert and yes major US banks can convert for you.

Why carry so much money in cash. Go to AAA and get a cash ATM card. Works well. When I leave LOS, I keep 4 to 5K in baht for my next trip.

hi k,

seconded to bigd. thai baht traded around 42.15 last friday. I expect the thb to fall even more against the usd as long as the oil price stays high. change your usd in bkk.

NEVER change baht at home,

the banks at the airport are open when you get to BKK and you get a decent rate (bring $50-$100 bills)

plus the ATM

the exchange rates at US airports are horrible

Bux, Seeing as Thailand has to import about 500 000 barrels of oil a day and the US has to import about 12 million barrels of oil a day i'm a little unsure as to why the high oil price would be US dollar positive in the USD / baht exchange rate.

The exchange rate any airport is not the best you can get (after service charges). Exchange rates at most banks in the US are OK for frequently exchanged currencies, but probably not very good rates for Thai Baht. For the best exchange rate, I would wait to exchange most of my money until I got to a BKK bank, which are all over the place in tourist areas. In case of an emergency on your way to LOS, you are much better off having US dollars on you. You can exchange $100 at the BKK airport when your flight arrives (takes just a few minutes) to cover the cab ride and your first night expenses. If you do bring US dollars to LOS, make sure they are new $100 bills only.

Actually, traveler’s checks are the best (especially if you can get them without a service charge) since they get an exchange rate better than cash in LOS (the banks are guaranteed redemption from the TC company if they follow id check procedures, something they can't guarantee if the cash is counterfeit). If you get travelers checks, make sure that they are a minimum value of $100 each (preferably $500), since they charge a small fee per check (but even with the TC fee, the effective exchange rate is usually as good or better than cash).

I would also consider paying your hotel bill in baht (cash) since many hotels will try and charge you a 5% service fee for using a credit card. Make sure you check on this before you go. If you have to carry more cash with you, that is just one more reason to bring TC’s instead.

hi bl,

interesting thought, I have not thought about that. the usdthb exchange rate has a high positive correlation the oil price. why that?

it is not the respective quantities, but the effect on the economy. the thai economy has to import all the oil they use, the thai govt. cannot subsidise it anymore soon, the gas price has already risen. now the labour unions demand higher wages. this leads to higher transportation and production costs in los. thailand begins to have a current account deficit, which also weakens the thai baht. the higher oil price makes thailand less competitive compared to its competitors. in general, a high oil price is bad for south-east asia, especially thailand and the philippines. I got to the opinion that the thai economy might even get into a recession soon and the property market might take a hit too. the gdp is sharply down from last year.

rgds,

bux

Does anyone know for sure what rate you get for USDs at the currency exchange MACHINES (not the ATMs) at Don Muang, and also, if those machine exact a fee for changing 100 USD bills? Thanks.

I don't know the exchange rate or fee, but there is no way I would put a $100 bill into a machine.

A reasonable point I believe.

On the other hand, many people insert their ATM cards into a machine, and I would venture it is worth more than $100. Of course, the ATM card can be replaced, and the $100 bill probably cannot.
