So I have been in Bangkok for a little while, and then my company drops a bomb shell on me. So I have a choice. 1. £60k salary and return to London - with some trips back to Asia 2. £40k Salary + 50,000baht monthly living allowance and travel expenses should I have to go back to Europe. Which would you pick ? Also should I get paid in UK and pay tax there ? or get paid in Baht and pay tax here ?

No brainer AFAI can see. 40KLbs is some $65K which is say 5.5K$/month or 220,000THB plus the 50KTHB living allowance. That will be even after 50% taxes in UK = 160KTHB/month to live where the most beautiful, available ladies in the world are. A teacher here lives on 35KTHB/month. You will live like an absolute King on that 160KTHB. Like the son of an Arab shiek. No brainer => go back to UK and you are crazy unless you have some extenuating circumstance you did not mention. well if you decide to stay in Thailand and be paid in £ a 40k salary would be taxed as follows £4895 tax free personal allowance the next £2090 @ 10%, 2090 0- 32400 @22% and over £32400 @40% so by my reckoning £7117 in tax plus your 11%? NI contr £4400 (i'm not sure about that some £94 weekly allowance but also some extra for a higher salary not sure if 40k crosses the threshold) so about 18% tax paid plus the 11% = 28% total on the 40k According to this the tax in thailand would be more but you may get some personal allowances so you have to check on that also you'd need to think about what you do with you NI copntributuons whether you would still pay in the UK? http://www.us-asean.org/Thailand/business_guide/taxation.asp Also some people would prefer to be payed in the £ as they feel less comfotable having baht. But any company with expats should have tax planners available to you to explain it all to you.

Have you thought about the weather? Price of property? Commuting? I'd say, stay in BKK, particularly if you can always go back to the Land of Smog if you want to. The again, you may be a Chelsea fan, and miss Stamford Bridge.

If you are paid a £40k salary from a UK company and live and work in Thailand then you surely would not be taxed in the UK providing you do not spend more than 90 days a year in UK. Normally an expat position would be Tax free with your company picking up your Thai tax obligation. This is the usual practice. In which case there would be no difference between your UK salary of 60k and your Thai salary of 40 k. Plus you would be getting a 50,000 baht allowance.Given the different costs of living between London and Bangkok you would be much better off in Thailand.

Sounds like a decesion based on strict applications towards the future considerations of wealth to me. Think what several years there on this income would mean. You would presumably still get the one months vacation in Thailand yearly? Consider it a sentence with parole maybe once a year? On release you are say after 4 long years Able to have saved 50% of this income. Thats perhasp 120,000 pounds at the current exchange rate of over 70 baht plus a pound, you are looking at a reward of over 8 million baht! Thats really a significant incentive (when parole is figured into it,..IE 30 days a year in Thailand) I am currently in Sydney but live in Thailand, (i have to be here 3 months due to serious injury of farang ex wife and mother of my teenage daughters) and its hell. I can understand people calling you stupid returning. I have an inability to return for durations unless its a must. But if your not too far gone, its an oppurtunity. Then again a modest wage in Asia and happiness now is sometimes a better view of life. Given the worlds direction, now might be the time to just "'live"........while we can.

DG "after 4 long years Able to have saved 50% of this income. Thats perhasp 120,000 pounds " I hate to burst your bubble DG but how the f*** is he going to even save 10% after UK Income Tax, company car allowance, NI, TV Licence, Cable costs, never mind entertainment, etc, etc... How is he going to afford to clothe himself or even eat? Where is he going to sleep? Maybe if they will give him a company caravan instead of a company car then one problem is solved. Still he's gotta eat.... Maybe he can eat the Caravan! Sorry about this woodyuk, but it has to be asked... What kind of company pays a (fairly) decent salary to a guy who can't even make up his mind on a simple no brainer like this? Any vacancies? TC

I'd say pick option number two and make a high recommendation for Silentbob (that's me) to take up employment within the firm in LOS as well.
