Guys just a word of warning. Just got back from BKK trip 3 of the year a couple of weeks ago.Had a call from my credit card company fraud department tonight and my card has been cloned and is currently being used in Hong kong. Well I have the card with me here in the Uk so it has sure been copied. Used the card in MBK, Robinsons and various ATMs in Bangkok and fortunately no strange transactions have shown up from Thailand. On my previous trip I used the card at a jewellers on Suk and they did take the card from my sight and drivers licence to verify and make an authorisation call? but in their defence they did try to persuade me to pay cash and not use the card at all. So somehow my card has been copied,it was never seen by any of my guests whilst I was not present. So possibly a scam with one of the ATMS or a retail outlet. Seems fraud protection on my card and the fact that I have used the card whilst here in the UK at the same time the clone is being used in Hk has saved me from any liability for the relatively small amount of fraudulent use, a few hundred quid, but it could have been much much worse. So maybe caution with the plastic is needed. Saw one pissed up falang at the ATM at Nana Plaza give his card to the bar girl and the pin number with take what you need instructions!!!............jeez and she was ugly! maybe his wife,if not then........probably is now!!

My daughter comes in to our bedroom and tells me Dad the credit card company on the phone and someone charged 15KUSD in jewelry on you card. She told them that doesn't sound like my Dad. She immediately had my full attention and I took over the call and the CC reversed all the charges and I didn't have to pay. I used the card at the Flipper Lodge in Pattaya to pay the bill.

There are two things that thieves can copy. 1. The card number and authentication code on the back. The numbers can be used at on-line retailers, or even retail stores if they just key in the numbers intead of swipe the card (this might take some kind of colusiton with the retail clerk). 2. Some theives have built illegal card swippers that read your magnetic strip and they can make a new card with the same magnetic information. So if they take your card into the back room, then you are at a higher risk. This is especially true if you give them a drivers license so they can copy addtional id that can used to fradulently use the credit card.

Had this happen to me a few years back, the card in question was only used in Dynasty INN in bKK and Royal Palace hotel Pattaya. Right before Xmas I was packing to go back to Ireland when I open my bill... 12,000 US was cahrged.. Started with Virgin Megastore in Newcastle UK, the transactions then went to France, Germany, Malaysia. I was not liable for any of it, but it really was a pain to get it all taken care of. I was pissed off. The Fraud Fella on the phone was quite honest about it and said, that they culprit has copied the card in their name so no >> would be asked by retailers, and now that the card was cancelled, when they use it it will show that the next time they try to use it, but RARELY will a shop clerk try to apprehend the f***er of even call the police about it. The Credit cards companies just write off the losses. He also said, that sometimes employees will ahve a tiny card reader on their bely, or attach it to the end of the card machine, so they can easily swipe. These card readers can hold up to 100 cards info and that normally the bastards that do this will get approx. 500$US for 100 cards. I alsways watch my card these days, and when they scan it, I look at the scanner to ensore no foreign devices are attached. Strangly, I met a fella in Pattaya recently and he alluded to this being his BUSINESS.

Yep happened to me last year. Card/details were used in England for 5000 pounds to purchase jewelry. On that occasion (new card), only used card to reserve room at Royal President and book online a flight with Bangkok Air. So one of the two was responsible, but which one? Easily fixed as the approval was in excess of the card limit and I've never been to England. I use a credit card with the lowest limit on it - but try to avoid it generally. The "hassle" of dealing with the transaction may be a pain depending on the circumstances. On another occasion, one of my cards was frozen due to the APPROVAL of a transaction while in LOS. Believe it or not, I was informed that the amount APPROVED was for $9,000,000.00 AUD!!!! Told the bank if I could get a $9 mil credit limit on a credit card - "I wouldn't be working". We worked out that the amount was probably entered incorrectly while trying to "authenticate" the card....so probably due to the hotel at the time.....but I never got any confirmed answers as to what exactly happened.....

Best practice is to use cash whenever possible and only use CC at established and reputable outlets. In lieu of that have one prepaid MC that you can use and top-up when necessary.

I may come off a tad old-fashioned, but I am all for using cash whenever possible, even at home. The only place where I'd use a credit card in Thailand would be my hotel. With the ubiquitous ATMs all over BKK, I rarely bother with credit cards (admittedly, I am not a big shopper). I never get grief with these things anyway; as soon as I see a charge that I don't agree with, I give the guys a call and they automatically reverse the charge and go after the retailer without any involvement on my end.

In the I hadn't used my credit card in Thailand due to the fraud factor. But now I won't use my credit card in Thailand due to that 3% conversion fee surcharge that credit card companies now charge. I bought my airline ticket for EVA airlines from their website on the internet. I thought I had a good price for the ticket then when my bill came, there was like $25.00 extra for the conversion fee.

I travel all over Asia but the only place where I did have problems is Malaysia...Penang and KL..... First time in Penang, Sheraton Hotel, they strip the card for the usual deposit....I see no problem....and that's the only time my credit card came outside my wallet.... Back to Thailand and HSBC calls me at 21.00 on Sunday (!) to inform that they registered some unusual activity and blocked my card.....got a new one couple of days later... Next trip to KL, rented a car and of course I had to use the card, again, only place where I used it....and again, back to Thailand, HSBC calls me again and this time not with a friendly tone......same guy of the first time told that I should have been more careful in using the card! Got a new card and never used any card again in Malaysia.....
