Had a phonecall from the fraud department of my (UK) bank today, to valadate several credit card transactions that had cropped up on my account. It has turned out that someone had "cloned" my card and was using it in Turkey of all places. I am posting this on this board because the card in question is one I use only in Thailand and nowhere else. I don't think it was cloned in any of the hotels, but probably in MBK or perhaps at a restaurant, or one of the car hire places that ask to take a credit card image as security deposit. I know this is f***ing obvious, but brothers beware as I am sure I am not the only one.

Yes it happens a lot and also in Hotels, so do not exclude them. Best thing is not to use a c/c where you do not really know. Hard to do I know, or else just do not let the card out of your site. Tell them bad luck if they want to take it out back.

As for identity theft, this is completely different to what you are experiencing.

Dirty Gulu had his identity stolen, bashed around the head a few times, used and abused, anally raped and then returned to him several months later.

Also I beleive Yuprude has had his stolen lately, when he got his back he believed he could speak Thai and it was returned in a dress, a red one.

Don't use your Credit card at MBK, Pantip, Fortune Town, or other questionable places.

I had someone spend about 6K USD in Milan for me last december. Most likely when I used my card in Pantip or Fortune town.

Last year I had some fraudulent activity on three accounts: Two from the US and in Thailand, Bangkok Bank was another. When I reported the fraud both US Banks responded immediately and professionally and after an investigation my money was returned.

On the other hand Bangkok Bank responded by asking me if I had a Thai girlfriend and after ten months they still have not done anything.

My advice if you have a local bank account is to have two of them; setup one for ATM card access and keep a small amount in it. The other account should not have any cards attached to it. Transfer as needed from the larger account to the smaller account.

Now I use only one ATM; period. It is a Bangkok Bank ATM and I keep every receipt and keep a spreadsheet of every withdrawal in addition to monitoring my account activity very often.

Most Thai ATM’s print the full account number and balance on each receipt so don’t throw them away until they are shredded!
