Hi folks, I have sold my apartment and I will move to Bangkok next week. I will bring in excess of US$200k in cash with me. Have you experienced any seasonal baht/dollar fluctuation over the years, when it makes sense to exchange at the best yearly rate?

Even if exchange rates were in a very small way influenced by seasonal factors (which I have never heard of), other geo-political and economic factors would dwarf the seasonal effects on rate changes. The recent decline in the US dollar was primarily because of China’s decision to base the Yuan’s value on a basket of foreign currencies such as the Euro or the Japanese yen, instead of being government-fixed based on the US Dollar as was the case previously. Most other countries allow exchange rates to be set by free markets, although some countries try to influence (usually weaken) exchange rates by having their Central Bank purchase US dollars and sell their own currency. The reason that countries like to keep their currencies low is increase exports, and increase employment in their countries. The recent increase in the Chinese currency against the US dollar caused most of the other Asian exporting countries (with cheap labor) to also increase in value without loosing export market share to the Chinese. Obviously, this included Thailand. The US government “officially” favors a strong dollar, but when the dollar declines moderately, then US imports fall and US exports rise. Those Boeing jets are a lot more attractive to foreign nations when the dollar falls, and that keeps more Americans employed. The Chinese currency is still artificially undervalued relative to the US dollar (to drive their export markets), so I would not "count on" a significant increase in the US dollar.

you might want to reconsider bringing that much money into LOS. If you happen to change your mind, and want to take that much out of the country at once you will have problems. There is a dayly limit on how much money you can take out of LOS without special permission. Just something to consider.

You should check to see if there are declaration rules in Thai immigration laws (for example: it is against US immigration laws to bring more than $10,000 into the US without declaring it). Does anyone here know of Thai limits? Either stay below their limit if there is one or declare it if above. But listen well to Koolbreez - you will definitely have problems bringing it out of Thailand.

Santa, you could bring in as much money into Thailand as you want. As other have said if you are from the USA there is a declaration limit of 10K USD max. It is not that you cannot take more than 10K out, but you just have to fill out a declaration form. Failure to fill out the form and they discover it, they can keep everything over 10K USD. Now I would be do some planning before bring 200K USD into Thailand. It is not that you cannot get it back out because you can such as using wire transfers, but there are some advantages for foreigner's by bringing into Thailand in a special manner by documented wire transfer. If you plan to buy a condo, it has to be proven that a certain amount of the money comes from abroad. If you do not did it by a Thai certified wire transfer then there is no proof. Also, some benfits in some types of VISA's. You can get special investment VISA's with that kind of cash.
