BK, its money related, but not strictly BKK, please remove if inappropriate and accept my apologies, if not, Thx.

Bro's I need a hand, I know how to calculate compound interest going forward, but what is the formula (is there one?) for going backward.

What I mean is, lets say I require 100,000 (currency doesn't matter), lets say I have 5 yrs to reach that amount, and i'm saving using a guaranteed product offering me say 5% per annum.... (if you're still with me i'm grateful !)
My questions, is how do I calculate the amount I need to place in the guaranteed product to achieve my goal of 100,000, based on the time I have and the rate of interest.

And (unfortunately there is more !)... what if I want to pay a single amount per year, for 5 yrs (same amount each year) how would I calculate the amount I would need to pay each year ?

Appreciate any help (and thanks again BK if you allow this topic to stay up).

Isn't it easier to rob a bank?

Jokes aside, the answer lies with the compound interest going forward but just requires shuffling the figures around,,,
Like A=b+c therefore b=A-c Algebra,,

M = P ( 1 + I ) n (n here is to the power of, not times as shown)

M is the final amount including the principal.

P is the principal amount.

i is the rate of interest per year.

n is the number of years inv

You want to find out P, so P= M divided by (1+i) to the power of n.

So,, P = 78,740.16

But when you throw in "yearly installments" you add a further twist. In this case I think its probably best to calculate it as 5 different calculations that when added give you the desired result. ( Although, undoubtably there would be a formula for this).

Called for dinner,, I'll be back with the yearly addition formula.

Mel.

Just a different interface and some different options than the one in dfp's post.

Those calculators are good. If still not satisfied, do a search for Financial Calculators and like topics til you get the one easiest for you to use. It can be a bit fun projecting...
