While I am interested in starting an English school, my wife has tlked about buying a bar, probably near Pattaya. My question is are they profitable, or only during the high season. Do you still nead a Thai partner?

Hmmm I've been going to Pattaya for several weekends and I can tell you that there are more girls in those bars than "farangs". Maybe it is because the low season but I started to go there very often the last part of the high season and there was not much difference. At least those bars near the bach road were not crowded as they were several months ago....same stuff near Jomtiem Beach (south of Pattaya)....

I would think that owning a bar anyways is a risky business. Many issues to consider. My group thought about opening a bar in Bangkok, but our corporate attorney talked us out of it. Also, if it is a Go Go type bar, then you will definiitey have to pay money to other parties to ensure that your bar stays open.
I am not sure if this is true, but I heard that a club called Global located next to Qbar was closed down because the owners pissed off a high ranking Police officer. Again, not sure if this is just a rumor, but things like this do go on. I know that many bars in Nana Plaza are part owned by the police. Just a data point for you to think about. I am not sure how it is in Pattaya.

Awww, so no bars for me??? ÝI really wanted to create an old American west type atmosphere with girls in can-can costumes willing to drag you upstairs for a while. ÝI always wanted to own a brothel, from the time I was knee-high to a grasshopper. ÝWell, is there any other way you guys know of to make money to live in LOS. ÝWe've got some money we're willing to do some sort of investment or entrepreneurship with. ÝAny suggestions? ÝDo you know of any other countries where a brothel might be a possibility? i have a good friend who owns(runs) a bar in patong.
married to a thai,so i do not know what the legal situation is regarding how much he can own or how much is in the wife's name.
he seems to be doing alright and had recently aquired a new falang partner.
perhaps JJ can help out.
maybe he can speak to my friend(JJ,you know which bar i mean on soi eric) and ask questions.
then maybe we can get some info from the horses mouth.
must admit a dream of mine,win the lottery and move to patong and own a bar.

Running a bar in Thailand will net you a small fortune - Ý Ý provided you start with a large one !! Ýjust ask the Guys who invested in Clinton plaza !! ÝIf, and its a very longshot, it did take off, the locals will want to muscle in, still, for many its a sort of dream, so if you can afford it, go for it, Ý- the end result will be, you start with the money, your staff with the experience - at the end, they have the money, and you've had the experience !!! Ý

The only way this works (owning a bar) is if you have serious poo yai friends, serious enough to keep the local saw naw (police district) off your back, not to mention the labor dept cops, etc. Foreigners are BARRED from owning a bar, by law. So you have to have a strong Thai front, and unless you have serious clout on your side, the labor cops will do you just for changing a videotape, or some other trivia. This true regardless of whether you run girls out of your bar, or not. IF you get beyond all that, beware of what happens when you have to fire any Thai staffer for any reason, because they will have their police friends harass the shit out of you -- again, the only way out is major police, military, and political muscle on your side firmly and that does not mean you must be paying them, it just means they must be true friends and like you. Without that you are standing naked in a steel shitstorm, asking to be turned into julienne fries. The chances are, if you have the kind of connections that you would need, well, you probably will be able to think of something more productive to do in muang Thai than to buy or open yet another bar.
If you want advice talk to farang bar operators who have been around a long time. Fat George at the Texxan, Washington Square is a good example. If you can catch him sober.
And that's ANOTHER risk factor, bar owners should NOT be alcoholics or inclined to turn into same. Just as guys who operate places with girls are better off impotent, believe me or not! One of the cardinal rules is, NEVER f_ck your own staff. Although I know of owners who broke that rule, like the late Bobby Tooms (Silver Dollar, Wash. Square).
That line about turning a large fortune into a small one is old but VERY VERY true.
Another danger: success! There was a stockbroker from HK, I thunk he was a Brit, or maybe an Ozzie. Retired with a lot of scratch and a Thai wife, opened a pub in Phuket. Big success, he had a lot of friends all over the Pac Rim and they came and patronized the place. Well, the little missus had a Thai boyfriend and both had big eyes, and they killed the hubbie and took the pub. The cops had little difficulty discerning who killed the unfortunate publican, and away the unhappy couple went to the monkey houses. A true story and only about 5-6 years ago, too.
Best you can do about starting a bar is "just say no"

Once again I am syncophant for Chateuajade, but every singlre bit of his info is correct. From 20 years experience here, many of them managing bars, I couldn't possibly tell you all of the first hand horror stories, but there is no need to... Chateaujade's last post is all the info you need.
Simple question: Of all the millions of guys who have come here and had good time, how many of them do you think have thought "Wow, wouldn't it be great to own a bar like this?" 99% maybe? There are reasons why it's the very rare Falang who succeeds. Don't get me started on those who do and why...
