Ok I’m really confused about the conversion rate… I read most of the replies on last post… Firstly around feb of this year http://www.xe.com stated the rate was 70 baht to the English pound, I bank with Nationwide so I got the full rate (70 baht from cash machines in Bangkok! After reading last post I figured id better check the rate again 60 baht to the pound? How come? Is the thai economy really getting strong? Is the conversion rate seasonal related i.e more tourists more input of money into their economy? If so is feb the best time to convert money? Has the flooding here impacted on our currencies value? If that’s the case why is it 2 dollars to the pound right now and not 1.8 (something like normal?) Can anyone spread any light?

not a free trading currency. after 1997 lots of controls put in to stabalize the economy.... now you are reading a lot about how the govt is trying to revert to a more market friendly baht.... like thais being allowed to hold dollar denomonated accoutns, etc..... also exportes used to be forced to convert dollar holding within a short time frame, now they are going to allow them to hold the dollars..... lots of reason behind the baht rise, most of all the continueing weakness across the board for the us dollar..... but like all things in the currency markets, when it changes, it changes hard...... and Asia in general is due for a blow up, so maybe now is a better time to be buying dollars.....

Jetseit, I hate to bust your P4P bubble. But the TG's are not going to lower their rates because the baht is kicking the shit out of the dollar/pound. I feel your pain. I remember when the baht/dollar ratio was 42/1. Now its 31/1. One word for you: PATTAYA!

Well, if there are fewer customers, and the customers can afford to pay less, then the girls will have to accept less money or not get business - don't prices go up during peak tourist seasons and down during quiet times?..I guess the question is: are there fewer tourists because of the strong Baht? Is this making the girls willing to accept less money? (And the answer seems to be 'no', 5555....)

An appreciating baht poses real problems for the Thai economy because it makes Thai exports more expensive especially in the USA which is Thailand`s main export market.Thailand is well aware of this. That is why it introduced restrictions on capital coming into Thailand several months ago in an effort to stem the rise of the baht, particularly relative to the $US.Thailand like most South East Asian countries is very dependent upon exports. However, its ever appreciating currency is reducing its competitive position especially relative to China which unlike Thailand does not have a freely floating currency. Before the 1997 financial meltdown Thailand`s economy was growing by about 9% per annum. It took about 3 years before any recovery took place, but the rate of economic growth has averaged only 4-5% per annum over the last 4 years. An appreciating baht will inevitably further reduce growth, and lead to higher unemployment.Included among the unemployed will be young Thai girls.Accordingly I think it is likely that an increase in pay for pleasure participants will result in a lowering of prices.Other factors tending to lower prices is a probable decrease in the number of tourists who will be deterred from going to Thailand because of the reduced purchasing power of their currencies relative to the baht, and the natural reluctance of punters to continue to pay the present asking price because to them that amounts to a price increase as their dollars, pounds, euros etc are buying less baht.

You can't really say.

Girls will always be willing to settle for less, for what they are willing to accept reasonably. They will simply always make the attempt to ask for more, if they can get it. This has, in my opinion, little to do with exchange rates.

For those pinching their pennies to be able to afford that p4p vacation, I guess it would...

just checked again its now 61 baht lol Valetta raised a good point, I lost count the number of times I seen made in Thailand stamped on things... I guess that means baht will always be a weaker currency. i just worked out after my flight I will have £2500) the difference between it being say 65 baht or 60 baht is about £165 lol I will just work a few more days... id rather it stayed above 60 though... HAS ANYONE SEEN IT DIP PAST 60 BAHT TO THE POUND?

Can't respond to the Pound but the baht used to be tied to the US dollar at 25. Very close now at 29 vs. 40 not long ago. Still a bargain for P4P but if you think it is expensive go to Manila.
