I assume most of you know about this but I could not find a thread on this forum. I thought, why not do the good deed and bring the great news myself. The Banks below will start charging any none Thai cards 150bt for the pleasure of you getting your own money. This is per transaction. Added to this the 20000bt max per single withdraw getting cash through Banks here may become a little expensive. Another great move by Thailand to encourage foreign visitors. Just a little note, Bangkok Bank's maximum withdrawal per transaction is 25,000 B, but you have to do it manually rather than using the Fast Cash option.

The max limitation on ATM's is due to the machine themselves that can only dish out 20 bills per transaction. You can go into a bank and do a Cash Advance against your debit card for up to the max of your debit card purchase limit.

Another reason to use traveler's checks instead of ATM (if you can get them for no service charge in your home country). I can get $500 American Express TCs for no service charge from my bank. Given the set service charge when I convert them to Thai baht it seems a good deal. We will still carry ATM cards just in case...

Banks are nothing more than commercial businesses. The costs of these international transfers are high. If you transfer money by SWIFT, it is considered normal that the bank charges fees, so why not on ATM cards? If you don't like it, stay away or use the method which RIT describes. If I am not mistaken, a bank normally charges 1% for the issue of TCs. So 20,000 would be 200 baht. And then there is another charge when cashing them. Makes ATM card withdrawals a bargain.

Doc: It's different here in the States a lot of banks don't charge & you can get them free at AAA. They're often free Amex offices if you use an Amex card too (depends on your card). Until recently you could get miles on your TC purchases at an Amex office as well. I read about people buying $5000 a week and redepositing them in their bank account just for the miles. I only got away with it once before my cards eliminated the loophole. I think TCs are only worth it if they're free. They're hard to cash in Nam and Cambo and they nick you for 3 or 4%. Here in Cal, First Republic Bank pay's the ATM fee wherever in the world you are. I just opened an account with 'em for just that reason. wj

Thakn you for your explanation. However, the US is not Thailand and vice versa. And again, if TCs are free, why not use them?

150 THB on a withdrawal of 20,000 THB is less than 1%. Recently I tried a Visa debit card from a Bank of America (USA) account, and found that BOA charged me 3% commission. Now, that I frikin high!! I also tried a Visa debit card from a Fidelity (USA) account, but they charged nothing, well at least not that they showed it later as separate account activity.

If I use my Thai ATM (Siam Commercial) card outside Bangkok they charge me 20 baht. Do I complain about it?
