I was advised by a company in the U.S. that I may have to pay additional shipping/customs charges here in Thailand besides the International Shipping charges to them.
My item is small and the value is only about $150.

Has anybody had experience with this? Is there a way to find out about it in advance?
Thanks,
Jazz

Mr Alan
Are you talking about import duties? It depends on what you are buying.

I'm afraid to order books from Amazon. Had to pay duty on a raincoat, and ordered 3 Panama Hats while here (only had to pay duty on one). I also order condoms in bulk, but they never charged for those. It's really hit or miss.

I'm buying Music Software from a company in the U. S. so it would be a small package and not a high value.

I have ordered loads of training material on DVDs (over the past few years) and have never paid a baht of duty for them. The only time I had to pay duty was for those damn masks.

hit or miss is true. I have a friend that ordered some things and the duty they wanted to charge for it was the price or more than the item was worth.

It doesn't sound like books to me.

I ordered books and they come in duty free, but in some cases Amazon will pre-charge extra for duties & taxes. I have had excess charges eventuall credited back to my credit card 6 months later.

Books are duty free? Is this the official policy in Thailand or just your luck of the draw?

You can try labeling the packing 'no value' or 'souvenir', or just keep the value very low. As people have said, it's a bit of pot luck.

Its the same worldwide with customs, you can receive parcels and not pay anything for years, and then one day the very same kind of parcel is stopped by a zealous custom guy and you will then have to pay ridiculous money to get your stuff...the word racket come to mind...
