These are just the monthly expenses. Of course, you have annual ones like Medical Insurance, I took a simple plan from Blue Cross (8,600 B), a better one would cost about (20,000 B) or so. The cost of the apartment could be less, if you go for a studio, previously I stayed in one, it was only 12,500 B/month I forgot to add in UBC (satellite TV) - 1,400/month (rounded) Also, check this page on costs in Bangkok: http://bangkoktonight.com/info/cost_in_bangkok.shtml

Cost of rentals varies enormously depending on location, and your ability to read Thai or have someone do it for you. AVOID the English language newspaper classified like the plague (at least for real estate) -- the main Thai tabloid for property rentals is Wattachak. BK's example of a 2BR apartment on Sukhumvit for 25,000 is certainly typical. However, a friend of mine had no trouble finding a 5 BR 2 Fl single house on 200 sq wah (800 sq m) of land, in Ladyao, Chatuchak for 27,000. The same mooban has 3 BR 3 floor townhouses for about half of that. All I am saying is, you will have plenty of choices. An apt in the farang ghetto is only one of them.

This may be slightly off-topic... But would any of your BKK residents be able to recommend a good 'guide' of sorts who can help us find the best apartment for our buck, who speaks Thai, help get us settled in... What would a service like this go for? And of course, I'd like someone very trustworthy whom you've had favorable experiences with.... thanks again

kmanrox, If you don't mind staying away from active area, you could get really good deals. A friend of mine got a 3 storey town house for only 10,000 B. He uses one level for his office, one for his bedroom and the other for storage. But it is way out in Sukhumvit 100+ area. All depends on your preference. BK

i prefer to be in the 'beverly hills' part of town, with lower crime, nice things, places with class.... maybe i am asking too much... am i? once again these questions may be a bit much, but afterall i am 90% sure i am moving to BKK cold turkey and if there's one thing i learned in the USMC it was if the only dumb question is the one you dont ask =)

Kmanrox, You will probably hear many different opinions on what is the "Beverly Hills" area, some may say down by the river, some prefer Sukhumvit and others prefer further out of town where you can get luxury town houses. ÝI have lived mostly around the Sukhumvit area and after extensive searching decided one of the best places is Somerset Lakepoint in Sukhumvit Soi 16. http://www.the-ascott.com/OurResi/ResiGeneralInfo.asp?p=76&t=Somerset&r=2 ÝThis probably won't mean much to you at the moment but Soi 16 is easily accessible from Sukhumvit or Rama 4 roads and also has a cut through to Soi 22 and Soi 24...easy access to Barons ha ha ha ha. ÝKuppas Restaurant, frequented by the Hi So crowd, is right next door. The prices for 2 bedroom are between 45,000 and 60,000 depending on size and whether or not you have a lake view. As I said, this is what I settled for during my search, however, by far the best-appointed apartments I viewed were Emporium Suites http://www.emporiumsuites.com . Again, very good location on Sukhumvit Soi 24 but the prices are in the higher range of 65,000 to 80,000 for 2 bedroom units. ÝBoth places have good security although Bangkok is generally a pretty safe place to live. Hope this helps.

- Think the best way, is to get on the skytrain, get off at each spot, and wander around the vicinity, checking prices - for me, being near a [any] Skytrain staion, plus a shopping center is all thats required. Whilst a 2 bedroom apt. in sukhumvit soi's 3- 55 will cost you 25 to 50,000 bt, I saw very nice two bedrooms, furnished, with small kitchen area, at a place called "Fair Tower" on Sukhumvit soi 50, - On-nut skytrain station [ the end of that line] and just a couple of hundred yards from the big tesco/lotus shopping complex ; monthly rate, 13,000bt. ÝCurrently I am in Victory monument area, and actually pay less for great Condo - albeit small, and being too busy to spend as much as BK on girls/drinks, -[OK, so now have the permanent TG + baby ] Ýwould probably live comfortably on about half his estimate ; Ýthe good thing with Bangkok, there is a range of everything from apartments to TGs at a budget to suit !
