A Police officer last Saturday Morning pulled me up as I walked back to my hotel (Landmark) and accused me of dropping litter on the street and ordered me to pay 2000 baht- When I told him I hadnt done anything he made me walk to the superior officer in a booth near by who said he also saw me- They said I had thrown a smoke butt in the gutter and if I didnt pay I would end up visiting the monkey house- I said "sam sip pi, mai buri! " or roughly I havent smoked in 30 years! This stopped them in their tracks and they tried to laugh it off- Its actually only been about 3 years since I stopped - but they were not to know- Point is watch for Cop scams in Bangkok if you are in that area-

... like the cool aplomb with which you dispatched these bush league crooks... the mere fact that you replied in Thai probably ended their ambitions on your wallet. ... you might have missed the Bangkok Post’s Spectrum report on this a couple of months ago... a great read, and a rare piece of investigative journalism... color pictures of the Thai government crooks caught red-handed picking through the purses of frightened tourists, and all... I believe it was reported by a farang journalist, accompanied by an intrepid next-generation Thai to photograph. ... still, a rather remarkable exposure in a country where journalism is under the control of the Thai government. ... the bottom line is that the Thai government scammers are not police at all... they have no authority to arrest, nor to assess fines... they've less authority than Western meter-maids. ... the scam is that they impersonate police officers to extort money from innocent visitors to Thailand... the authoritative uniform is very deliberately concocted to create in foreign visitors the same sinister threat a Third World corrupt policeman would create... I imagine sort of like... umm... well, sort of like a Thai policeman, I guess. ... a Thai friend, an attorney, told me that I can ignore and walk away from these guys if accosted... all they can do is report me to the police... which is what I would do anyway, for a lot of good that would do either side. ... what a pathetic Third World klepocracy the Thais have for a government. ... the original investigative report (too lengthy to paste here) is still posted on line... amusing read... http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/investigation/193476/bangkok-cigarette-police ... the follow-up article is below, and quite a bit more was written about it (Google “litter + Bangkok + police + scam”)... the http://www.thaivisa.com forum burned with scathing incriminations. ... in the end, we know noting changes... despite the exposure, and the properly indignant Thai Police response to this sort of assault on innocent, decent citizens, they were back at it, coming after you within a few weeks... fearless criminals, doing what Thais government crooks do best in A Nation of Theives (... huh... the title to a chapter in my sociological study on Thai culture). _____________________________________________ (the follow-up article) Tourists warned about 'cigarette police' http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/194650/tourists-warned-about-cigarette-police Foreign tourists have been told to take a hard line with the thetsakij, or Bangkok's city inspectors, who have been accused of unfairly targeting them to issue fines for littering. Manit Techa-apichoke, deputy director of the City Law Enforcement Department, said foreigners who feel they have been unfairly targeted by the thetsakij should refuse to pay the fines. He said they should alert the nearest district office or police officer, so action can be taken against the inspectors. Mr Manit's statement comes on the heels of an investigation published in last Sunday's Spectrum that revealed foreign tourists, particularly those on Sukhumvit Road, were targeted by thetsakij to pay fines for littering, while Thais committing similar offences were largely ignored. The report, which garnered more than 150 comments online, revealed that many of those targeted by the thetsakij were not issued receipts. The Spectrum investigation also found that very few rubbish bins were present in areas where the thetsakij operate, leading some to suspect that they were removed to increase the likelihood that foreigners would litter. Foreigners interviewed by Spectrum investigators said that it seemed as if inspectors were standing by ready to swoop immediately once they littered. Inspectors demanded they pay the fines on the spot, telling them that if they wanted to take the matter to a nearby district office or police station, they would end up paying much more. Mr Manit said any city inspectors found guilty of extortion would be sacked immediately. He said that opaque rubbish bins were removed from city streets as part of security measures in the wake of bomb attacks in the capital. Some thetsakij had taken advantage of the situation to extort foreigners who litter, Mr Manit said. Members of the public and tourists can call City Hall's hotline at 1555 to report any attempts at extortion by city inspectors.

Why are you saying this if you also state that the 'Cigarette Police' is not part of, nor authorized, by any official government agency...?

2 weeks ago I was walking out of the pharmacy that is after Soi 4 with a tiny ginseng bottle in hand, I opened it while walking and when passing in front of the little shoe repair stand I could hear the man in the stand speaking loud in his phone " Reo Reo, farang seu yeuart see namtan, mee koat!!!!" (quick quick, the farang with a brown tee shirt has a bottle!!!), and out of the petrol station come one of those rubbish police guy who start following me immediatly...it was surreal. I started to walk slowly, acting like I was looking for some place to drop the empty bottle while keeping an eye on him...he was almost salivating...i made him walk until soi 10 and then turned, put the bottle in my bag and gave him a broad Thai smile and the one finger salute...Fook them...

They are so discreet and cunning, assuming no farang understand what they say....
