A question for the expats. Wasn't really shopping for them but I noticed that european automobiles in thailand have sticker prices 2-3 times the same car in the u.s. I assume high import tariffs. Does the price drop off considerably in the used car market? Are japanese made cars similarly expensive? Anyone have any experiences with shipping a car from their home country into thailand? I know a car isn't necessary but it would be nice to have one (anyone know what a honda phantom motorcycle goes for?).

cars are very expensive in Thailand .. they hit anything imported (even parts) with high duties .. My g/f has a Honda Accord and it was B1.2M .. this is more than it would cost in the USA. The European imports are very expensive.. more than double what the same car would cost in the USA .. I have never understood car ownership as cabs are cheap and plentiful .. My g/f dream has been to get a Mercedes and I am doing everything I can to talk her out of it .. put the difference into real estate and have a long term investment.. Oh and yes, used cars are expensive too and god knows how they were taken care of.. some Thais love their cars and give them great service.. others do not and you don't know which type owned the car

Nikko, I did some checking on car prices several months ago. The European cars as you stated are a little high. BMW, Volvo and MB are high as compared to USA. Japanese cars are higher than USA, but a better bargain. In regards to prices on Honda, here is there Thailand website. It includes prices. http://www.honda.th.com/HCT/index.html

The costs and import tariffs are related to how much of the car is made in Thailand or Thai parts. My data is old but I was looking for a car, at the time (about 2 years ago) and exchange rate, it was around $30,000 for a Toyota Camry (high end of three models) and similar for a Honda Accord or CRV. Same cars should be about $20-25,000 in the USA at the time, maybe a scratch less for similarly equipped model. A low end Volvo cost about $50,000, and IIRC a Chrysler PT Cruiser when they first came out were offered for around $70,000. Yes, that's USD for the same car which retails USD around $15-23,000. Now for a BMW 3-series the price was around $50,000, comparatively lower because it had a high percentage of Thai parts or assembly. FWIW we drove a Honda Accord while in Thailand (it was a rental with low miles) and the quality did not compare with the same Honda assembled in Marysville, OH. I am very glad that I did not end up buying a car while in Thailand. As for the used car market I was always advised against buying used in Thailand because Thais traditionally take very poor care of their items and supposedly neglect even the most routine maintenance. Don't know if this is actually true, just what I was told and read.
