I am planning on how much cash (USD) I should take with me.  I have heard about often credit card frauds in Thailand.  Should I be paying cash in massage, bars, small restaurants?  Is danger different from city to city?  I will visit BKK, Hua Hin and Phuket.

Thanks.

My credit card company got ripped off for 12K. I had thought I used it at only one hotel but I had used it at  three. Someone made a fake credit card and used it at a department store. I didn't have to pay anything but still a hassle. I only use my card at hotels for the bill. I bring traveller checks around $500 and my ATM. To cash a traveller check you will need to bring your passport with you. Call your credit card company and let then know when you will be travelling in LOS or their security program may put a hold on your card.

I normally take about $3000 USD in large bills for 3-4 weeks, be very careful with it if you take cash and lock it in the hotel safety box.  Use a small padlock as well as the safety box key. When going out for the evening I normally take about 5000Baht cash, CV

Brothers,
I saw a very interesting article in Sundays paper and it seemed to be a perfect solution for all the credit card scams in LOS.

Seems that Citibank and AAA the auto association (are they even in LOS?) are teaming up to offer a prepaid plastic "money card." Looks like Citibank already offers it and AA will follow come 1 Jan.

Thanks for the quick responses.

But would not you use the credit card in the shopping malls (like WTC or Emporium) and big restaurants?  As if this is the case i would need to bring too much cash with me and that can spoil the whole vacation.

KK,

If you are going to use your credit card, use one with a very low limit, say US$ 5K. I have been using my credit card for the past 1 1/2 years in Thailand, with no problems. Most likely because it has such an anaemic credit limit.

Bring cash if you like, buy some travellers checks just in case. BTW, you can also use your ATM cards here to withdraw cash instead of using your Credit Card's cash advance facility.

Skip, thanks for that tip.  I only have a Visa c.c. but after reading your post I checked the Visa website and they have the same (similar) pre-paid-money card.  I'm going to get one of them for my upcoming trip and leave my regular card at home.  I like to have something to fall back on if the ATM's are down or lose my ATM card, and cause I don't like walking about with my passport traveller's checks I end up cashing in a hotel and costing too much.

I think there is too much hysteria over credit card and ATM fraud.

There should be no problems using your credit cards at most restaurants and decent shops. Typically any place you're going to rack up a bill worthy of a credit card (e.g. over 800B) other than a bar is going to be pretty safe (statistically).

Use your ATM card for enough cash to spend in the markets, bars, food stalls, etc.

But you should always have a backup plan in case one or both of your cards is stolen or otherwise put out of commission. Either have another credit/ATM card back in your room or have some cash hidden about. I always keep a stack of good old american $100 bills around, just in case, but I haven't ever needed to use them.

If you tend to hang out with a lot of questionable characters, then you might want to be even more careful than I am.

I would pay in cash at all the bars but credit cards would be fine at large hotels, department stores and restaurants.

X,
Glad you found the tip helpful.

What I REALLY wanted to say though...boy! I bet you'll write a 'novel' field report. Looking forward to it.
