Just in case you you have fallen head over heels for a girl, and you are now considering sponsoring here living expenses here in Thailand, perhaps you would like to read some interesting observations here.
With the internet outlets flourishing here in Bangkok, we see them filled with girls sending emails, even at 3 baht a minute! That's incredible since the cost of internet connection is less than 10 baht an hour (if you had a computer and a telephone line). One of the readers here mentioned once giving a girl a hand with her letter to her boyfriend. Undoubtedly, she was requesting for some funds to pay for something. After completing that email, she sent it off, and then did the "Copy and Paste" and shot off another 5 more emails. This is certainly not spam, but personalized bulk-emailing, as one emarketer has suggested. 
Recently, I met with a an old friend, who casually mentioned that she worked at an internet outlet just outside Nana Plaza. She was just amazed at the all the stories that she had to help translate. Basically, the girls were there to send fund requests. Now, here is the interesting part, some of the girls are writing their emails with their Thai boyfriends as a company. Now, for those who are sending funds over, you should realize that you could be financing their boyfriends instead of the girl only.
I was so bemused by the whole story that I told it to another girl, who is also operating a small internet outlet, and she said, well, that is not the whole story. Apparently, that very boyfriend is collecting money from this girl (who is requesting money from the farang boyfriend), to support his "other" girlfriends! So, your money is really moving around the whole circle of friends!
A friend of mine who runs a translation company once did a little campaign to get some translation jobs from the Patpong girls. The girls were given a colored coupon which gave them a discount on the first translation job. So, when these girls appeared at the office with the colored coupon, he knew who they were.  He had seen so many stories and excuses that he could literally write a book on it. The excuses for money ranged from the sick parent or sibling, hospital payments to a dead buffalo. The amounts requested ranged from 4,000B to 100,000B. The minimum amount was rather surprising, and the girl was encouraged to ask for more.
These girls may not have the knowledge to get a degree, but they certainly have the skills to reap money off the guys who make the big bucks. They are also aware of the concept of multiple income streams and time sharing (the trick is to get a farang boyfriend from different countries). One Thai girl asked me, why I like them, and I said, they were nice, beautiful and they knew how to please. And she added, they are also tricky and liars. I couldn't disagree entirely, I would not use the word "all"... but certainly some.

BK ... good post.
I think a number of us have realised that quite a few of the bar girls are very good at separating farang(s) from money. I have been a sponsor and know only too well. She was not a bar girl (she worked for a PC company) but the money issue was not a lot different.

I didn' "help" her I just happened to be with her at the time and she explained to me exactly what she was doing!!! You are right it is quite a booming "industry". this girl was genuinley at Uni, fairly intelligent, but thought nothing of telling abou 8 different guys that she "lubbed" them and was being sent cash by ALL of them - who obviously all thought they were the "only one". As said at the time her attitude was "they f_ck me so I'll f_ck 'em back". We ALL know what goes on and most of us are happy to "partake" so lets not pretend to be surprised!!!  ))

Ý- mind you, there are SOME out there in that category, - and also you have to remember, unlike Western countries, if your sick, poor, out of work, you cant expect the government to do much for you here - Ý ÝT I T.
