When I was in Japan, the best way to get a visa was to teach English. This would get you a three-year work visa. Once you have the visa, you could quit and find a job in, say, IT having made some money from teaching.

Japanese immigration rules statet that a degree is the minimum qualification you need to get sponsored.

Do English schools in Thailand have the same requirements?

Also, I know Korea will check over a degree to see if it's fake but as yet the Japanese don't. Same with Thailand I assume.

Hope someone can shed some light on this. Just an enquiry at this stage.

Hope this is appropriate for 'Money Matters'

I was thinking about doing the same thing and I don't have a degree. I was told by one TEFL school that a degree is preferable but not totally necessary as "this is Thailand". I think you would need a TEFL certificate though, then if you are working and the school is satisfied with your peformance they will almost certainly over look the degree issue.

Getting a job teaching English will in no way whatsoever help you get a visa.

Chome,
I do not want to be an smartass, but it seems to me that the answer to this would be irrlevant to you. As you already said, you were in Japan and over there a degree was required. From this I deduct you have a degree. Thus, the answer to your question would have no material relevance in your case either way.

As for the actual answer to your question.... sorry, but I do not know.

Again, sorry if I am coming accross as a smartass, but once you get familiar with B1 you will understand

P.S. The comment about the checking of fake degree credentials is interesting. Why would that be of interest to you?

Smegma:

Was it possible that when Chome was in Japan, he was not working as an English teacher?

mm3, yes, it is possible.

it is also possible that he/she is asking out of interest for a friend. also possible that he/she doesnt have a degree and in japan had to produce a fake degree and would obviously prefer if he/she ddint have to do that again.

but in most cases, if he/she makes such a reference it would mean having gone through the experience. otherwise no need to bring up the reference; couldhave jumped straight to the question: "is a degree needed?" thailand is thailand, japan is japan, and so on.

korea checks for fake degrees, but not japan! ok . very interesting. now you tell me what are we to infer from all that is said in the post. does he/she have a degree or not?  i do not know  ;)

Agreed the post is somewhat mislesading as to whether the poster has a degree or experience from staying in Japan
From what I understand about English in LOS;
If you have experience in Japan you will be snapped up.
However if you dont have a degree then it will be difficult to get a work permit. Read a work permit not a job, as the 2 dont go hand in hand in Thailand.
In order to get a jon teaching you will also have to meet the physical test of being an able bodied white man.
I do not fit this criteria and despite having experience teaching, (not in Asia), a degree and a TEFL I have been unemployed in Thailand for 6 months now

I was in Japan as a tourist. I don't posses a degree. My query was based on the fact that different countries have different requirements for issuing work visas. Therefore the answer would've been relevant. I have visited Hong Kong and Singapore as well and would like to relocate from the UK to one of these countries so I'm asking questions as anyone would.

The visa requirement question is a common one and  is raised on various web sites for foreigners in Japan and for other countries.

Ajarn.com is a popular site for teachers and questions about qualifications etc are posted somewhere on their boards.

The tone of the original posting was an enquiry. Postings such as this one reveal more.
