In 2 years I will have a candidate degree in economics, or so we call it in Denmark. I think the rigt word is a marster. - You read 3 years at the university and get a BA, you reed 2 more years and get a marster (candidate), or whatever it's called. After finishing the 5 years my start salary in Denmark would be around 4.500$ (before taxes) a month. If we would say that I got lucky and got a job matching my degree of education in BKK how much would I earn, (guess). As far as I know they don't pay income taxes in Thailand, but they pay 7% when they buy things. Is that right?

Turist, Not that important but "master's" degree. In the U.S. anyway for economics probably master of arts, abbreviated m.a. There are a few threads here that you should be able to find that deal with getting a job in Thailand. Basically, getting the type of job you are contemplating is like hitting the lottery. If you gained employment with a western firm as an expat, you could expect a western salary. By comparison, I have read that graduates from the m.b.a. program at Chulalongkorn (arguably Thailand's most prestigious university) have a average starting salary of 40,000 baht a month (to round off call it $1,000 U.S.).

First, salary is a function of the job, not the degree. Second, there are income taxes in Thailand, but certainly much less than Danemark. About the salary for a specific job, it depends on whether you are hired as expatriate or local. If local, then much less than expatriate. What types of jobs do you suppose a degree in Economics (advanced or not) qualifies you for?

It would be damn nice to get a job in a "western firm" and work and live in BKK with a salary of about 200.000 a month! (bring 4 girls home l/t every day) My education qualifies me to a wide range of funktions. Analyst (you collect a lot of data and transform it to information) International transactions Marketing Banks Stocks (I know of graduated economis who now sits on wallstreet) But often, you find people with this education as "head" of the economi devision in "larger" firms! (fun, - the last 3 "state-ministers" (our form of president) in Denmark has this education too)

Well, I can see as some of those skills might be attractive to a firm doing business in BKK, but I would imagine that it will be quite difficult to get a job straight out of the gates, as an expat, paying 200K. Maybe if you can walk on top of water and raise the dead, but even then the authorities probably wouldn't grant you a Visa. Your best course would be to try to find some people who do this kind of work in Bangkok now and then find out how they got the jobs there. Add some experiences to your CV. Maybe learn Thai in night school. One thing that's been piquing my curiosity in this thread though, is that as far as I recall you haven't even been to LOS yet, correct? Usually guys go ape and want to move there AFTER they've had a visit. Obviously you're the sort to prepare in advance!

I would say your best course is to join an international firm in your own country that has business, or preferably a large office, in Thailand. After a few years, if you're good, you might be able to angle a job in Bkk at that company or through contacts you've made. This will, by far, be the most profitable long-term stategy, if you have the patience. I really can't see any firm in Thailand hiring you right out of school for anything close to a decent salary.

I wouldn't say the job market is so great for expats at the moment. Every single one of my expat friends have taken pay cuts since 1997. Those who were making 500-600k+ a month are making 300-400k and less now. The only reason why they are mostly all still here is because they have already been harpooned by local girls, which pretty much will limit how much sanook you can purchase anyway. A good number of jobs that would have went to expats before are given to locals now. A lot of positions were dissolved or fused with other positions and the expats relocated back home. If there's a job to be had... you really should try to secure it at home first and have them send you here. Try Ericcson or Nokia? ;)

They most certainly do pay income tax in Thailand.....on my salary it is up to 30%.....If your country has a double tax agreement with Thailand...then you can also be liable for some tax in your home country.

It's pretty tough for an Expat to get employment from an employer in Thailand. I came after I was contacted by a friend of a friend, that new I could pick up and move on a days notice and that I was skilled in alot of areas of manufacturing and engineering. I left a job in the states paying 50,000 USD/year (pretty good for a 27 year old) for a job in LOS for 12,000 USD/year. Pretty stupid huh? I like adventure, and seen it as a challenge. But after me and the boss didn't see eye to eye I started looking for other employment in LOS. Bye this time I was married and had a baby on the way. I searched for 3 months and came up with nothing. Thai nationals only. I got a break from a friend that that knew someone that knew someone and got a job. I speak thai, have engineering degree, and 10 years experience, in the states it would be easy for me to find work. But in LOS it's all about Thai Nationality Only. It's all about knowing somebody, that's the key to getting a job in LOS. But don't expect a western salary.

Kryptonite has got it 100% right. You need to know someone for a good chance of a job. Thais are smart. They get good degrees both in Thailand and in the West. If a Thai can be hired at a lower salary then they will be employed. You need a field that they cannot compete in. Education?Business with foreign companies? Western management? Another way is to work for a multinational that has a base in Thailand. It is not easy. However, when completed it is a dream. Trust me!!!!!!!
