Hi Guys, I hope someone can give me a little help in the form of information. A couple trips ago I was cruising on Sukumvit and suddenly ran into a real live Canadian Bank of Nova Scotia branch. It's not Banking, it's Scotiabanking! In a previous life (like the 80s) I worked in Toronto at the Bank of Nova Scotia main branch Bay Street and King West in treasury as a foreign exchange trader. Since then did NY, Chicago, Frankfurt, Paris, London and now Abu Dhabi, UAE. I am still in the money game trading derivatives with oil cash. What I am curious about is there any Farang expats on the board that know any Canadians that work at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Bangkok? If yes, I am most likely coming out in late November for just a week and would like to hook up with any guys that are at Scotiabank or really any other guys in finance in Bangkok (and to be honest anyone else that is around at that time). There will be two of us who are ex-ScotiaBank but now working in the UAE flying into town to let me know if anyone has the story on ScotiaBank Bangkok. Any help or hints are most appreciated. Thanks to all the board in advance, Tunnel Rat

Hi Tunnel Rat - Sorry, I can't help you with your request, but as a Canadian planning an extended holiday in the LOS, I'd sure like to know what kind of services they would offer at that bank branch - i.e., do they operate as a regular bank branch, where one can open accounts, withdraw cash, etc? Thanks for any info you can provide. (Maybe I should pursue this further under "money matters".) Regards snowbird

Hi Snowbird, It looked like a correspondant bank set up to only service corporate clients so I don't think it is going to be very useful as a retail bank for you to use. However, it is pretty straight forward to open a regular bank account and get a cash card at any of the usual Thai Banks. Once you do this you could get wire transfer instructions (SWIFT codes) and before your next trip wire some cash so you have a bank account full of Baht when you get off the plane. Today it is almost as easy to just use your regular cirrus bank card and take baht directly out of your home account back in Canada. I do this all the time with my Dirham bank account in the UAE when I am in Thailand and back in Canada. I can tell you it was quite a surprise to see the Bank of Nova Scotia sitting on Sukumvit Road. After I get burned out of trading derivatives maybe I should try to get a job as branch manager and take anyone from head office that visits over to Nana Plaza to discuss "bank issues". I'll bet the Canadians at head office in Toronto are always coming up with excuses to go "inspect" the Bangkok branch again especially in Febuary. Cheers Tunnel Rat

The bank of NS is set up like a regular bank. They have teller windows etc, just like the Thai banks. There is no B of NS ATM machine, but my Scotiabank ATM works at most banks here. There are only two or three tellers at the branch and you cannot do anything with you ATM card - ie change pin etc. However you can get new ATM cards send direct to them via bank mail. Hope this helps

Thanks a lot for the info, guys. The last time I was there I basically lived off my ATM card, and will probably do the same this time around. What I will do, though, is have one ATM card for "Cirrus", and one for "Plus"; that way if one does go missing you've always got the other. I like the idea of receiving a new ATM card through the bank mail if you need one, that's really worth knowing. I tend to not use my credit cards much while there; the cheaper hotels I favour usually like being paid in cash anyway, I usually feed from the sidewalk vendors or food courts, and all boozing is straight cash. And the best thing of all is that my two month holiday this year is a paid one; thanks to direct deposit the cheques still arrive every two weeks. I like to think of it as being paid to drink beer and chase TG's(or rather be chased) - ya gotta love it! Cheers snowbird PS Nokna, do you now hate me, too ?
