Just out of interest, - know for various reasons, well, one in particular 555 - money often sent to Thailand from overseas, alot of people, especially from the states, use Western Union - who currently sell you Thai baht at 44 to the $ and pay out here at 40bt. - plus I think add on a decent service charge - Anyway I recently had a payment made by "moneygram" - seems worth a look, I was able to collect it at a Siam Commercial bank, no doubt can be collected many places, just had to produce ID, there was 200bt in commission taken off the total - BUT, I was paid out the current daily rate, 42.4 bt. Also available 10 minutes after being sent, offices worldwide, they have a web site < http://www.moneygram.com > maybe worth keeping in mind.

thaiprivateeye; Maybe you can help me on this one??? I was under the impression that only a person that has a Thai citizenship, or a work visa can open a bank account in Thailand. Is this true, or can a foreigner open an account now just using their passport?? The reason I am asking because it's much easier for me to have money wired into Thailand if I need it, then to use a service like Western Union or moneygram. -ABC, maybe the law states, as you say - but of course this being Thailand, - anythings possible, and Banks certainly wont turn you away. Just go to any bank, [ I find Siam Commercial very good ] - the head office sometimes better, in that it saves you a day re accessing funds sent from overseas, - [ for Siam. Com. this is on the corner of Soi Chidlom and Pethcburi Rd., - otherwise the office just down Sukhumvit soi 11 is OK ] you only need 500bt. and passport, - they may hint at a work visa or something, just say sorry, dont have - if they show some doubts, mention you have a "large' amount of overseas funds you are waiting to transfer to an account !! that will soon see you with a simple savings account at least, pay a 50bt. fee and get an ATM card - and you are in business.

ABC, I am a non-Thai Asian. I managed to open a personal Savings Account at the Bangkok Bank at Silom Road, Bangkok about 11 years ago and till today I am still maintaining the A/c.Each time I go to LOS I try to top up the A/c so that I have something to fall back on in case of emergency. I also have not problem getting cash advances in baht using my Citibank Visa and MasterCard credit cards from any of the Thai bank ATMs.

PL69, Until 3-4 years ago, it was possible for a foreigner to open a regular bank account. But not now. You need to show a work permit if you are a foreigner. However, I heard from a friend, that it is possible to open a special account, you will be given an ATM card, but you cannot deposit any local checks. All the money must be wired in from overseas. BK

BK, I have opened, or helped Buddies open accounts recently, as I say, with the ecconomy as it is, they are unlikely to turn you away, the Officious ones may ask for a work visa, but you will certainly be able to open a savings account without, - granted you may have to try 2 or 3 banks ... and the hint of a large transfer soon, certainly hastens the procedure !

BK/thaiprivateeye, What is the reason that Thai banks disallow foreigners from opening bank accounts ? I don't understand the rationale for this. Normally when we open an account with a bank we deposit money with the bank. The bank then use our money to lend it to others at a higher interest rate than what they pay us for our deposits. So in the long run the bank is using our money to make more money for themselves. So why do they disallow foreigners from depositing money with them ? It doesn't make any business sense at all!

Sup bkkz, PussyLover 69 and ThaiPrivateEye, The reason the larger institutional Thai banks like Citicorp disallow foreigners from opening up bank accounts is because the Thai Government is cracking down on money laundering schemes as well as criminal actions via the bank. Thailand is also trying to clean up their image and we call can see that by the crack down as some clubs by the Police, as well as the times things close at. This is what my attorney in Thailand told me. But, I will still try to open an account at the bank that thaiprivateeye mentioned. Thanks for everyone's input and information.
