Dear Brothers,
I've just finished reading the very informative thread on Cupidy Massage, and was struck by one veteran's advice that "one line of BS deserves another," referring to negotiation ploys with papasans trying to charge exorbidant rates. Another veteran got the lower rate at Cupidy after convincing the papasan that he lives in LOS. The papasan asked him where, and I assume he had a good answer. Now, if I were an expat on an extended assignment for a large Farang corporation (a position I've been in, but not in LOS), where might I be living? What would be a nice line of BS to respond to papasan's question?

You may be right LY, but having had lots of int'l expat experience, I know first hand that lots of corporate types on assignment abroad don't learn the local language beyond a few words. I can name dozens of companies for whom English is the official internal language, no matter where in the world the business is conducted. One of the vets on the Cupidy thread even specified that he only spoke English to the papasan. So unless Thailand is a completely different case than every other country in the world where Fortune 100's operate, there've gotta be some short-term (up to 3 year) expats who don't speak Thai. My impression from the postings - and I grant you I may be wrong - was that this was the case for at least some of the vets offering advice on the thread.

I think what the punters said was more like - "Last time I came here I paid 1800" based upon good advice from the board. This whether they had ever set foot in Cupidy or not.
Personally I am not going to get into a sweat over 200 baht. As I posted before - if they want to nick me 200 they can assume that their tip is hidden somewhere inside the 2000 & they will need to go look for it. 2 can play the f*** the falang game. If they ask tell them you live in Silom road - nice upscale address. Pud Thai? Nid Noi. But I am learning. Smile & grin like a monkey. RTB

No need to go too far on the BS. Tell him you're stayin' at the xxxxx (insert the name of a medium class of hotel e.g. Asia etc.) then say you've been there for a month now and yer lookin' for an apartment. Credible, or not?
