I usually try to have a short conversation with them first, maybe ask them how their Holiday was or ask about something about their life. Then buy them a drink, this butters them up. Then usually they slip in their suggestions on which girl. Like most, sometimes I go with them and sometimes not.
I have learned of a lottery type process that is used to help the papasans/mamasans make suggestions. I entered a soapy real early one day, since I am a regular they let me in. The girls were drawing numbers from a box. I asked what it was, and was told that when a customer lets the papasan/mamasan pick or asks for their suggestions they have the girls numbers written in order according to the lottery draw. When the girls is picked she goes to the bottom of the list. When new girls arrive, they are added into the non-picked list at the bottom and move up accordingly.
Seems like a fare way to handle it for the ladies. This is just one place I go to alot, and it isn't probably used in all places.

Regarding tipping and rapport with the cheer guest, I think it's all for naught unless you're going to visit again. No matter how much he likes you, tip or not..... he can't make anything magically appear that isn't already in the bowl or in the back room.

Everytime I've taken the cheer guest advice, it was disappointing! If a cheer guest sets the price wouldn't you want to tip to get favorable price? Maybe no farang tax.

If you tip a cheer guest 100 Baht, well, that's just 100 Baht. Ý If he's going to double charge you, or give you a surcharge, often he gets an even bigger "tip." However if you ask for his phone # and state (on the phone) that you'll require the standard price (and hence probably become a regular customer), you'll probably not have to worry about being double charged again.
For example in Nataree, I've seen overseas Chinese and falangs get charged 2500-3100 for the standard 1900 'A' bowl girl. ÝWell, that extra 600-1100 often goes straight to the cheer guests (and NOT t the house), since it's not official policy (and not everyone gets overcharged). Ý ÝWhat are you going to do, ask to talk to the "boss?" Ý

I was told that the facial features of Thai (near Chinatown) are indistinguishable from Overseas Chinese. It's when they try to speak English that tips them off. Maybe you can tell them that you are Korean. Maybe the overcharge will be less, who knows.

True... but I think that it should be known that this isn't overcharging from a racial/ethnic point of view (not usually anyway). It's more like opportunistic overcharging. It's not because of malice or ill will towards you. If you're a Thai (pure blood or Thai Chinese or whatever) from overseas, who can't really speak Thai, you're just as likely to get overcharged.
Yes, you're less likely to get double charged if you're Asian... but that's not an absolute.

Pack, it's still partially racial/ethnic in nature. Many Thais are definitely more likely to try to pull a fast one when they see my face than yours. This kind of racism doesn't bother me much, it is pretty innocuous.
Now a small minority of Thais will treat a clueless Thai person much better than an equally clueless Farang, out of some sort of brotherhood type thing (or us vs. the evil farang thing). That is really offensive, but still mostly harmless and I feel more sorry for those guys than hatred.
