Quote: from DaffyDuck on 12:23 am on April 3, Seems to me that you are the one that isn't quite aware that April 1st is *not* just an American tradition (it's not a holiday), but quite widespread throughout the world:
April Fools is continually pushed in America by individual Americans (not Americans as a whole) and the illegal American media whom never get any sex. There's no place for it on message boards. Ancient cultures, including those as varied as the Romans and the Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on April 1. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.) In medieval times, much of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, as the beginning of the new year. In 1752, Great Britain finally changed over to the Gregorian Calendar, and April Fool's Day began to be celebrated in England and in the American colonies. It's not a "tradition", but tolerated jumbo garbage. You're 0 for 2, silly wabbit.
Quote: from sandontoes on 7:17 am on April 4, 2005 this had nothing to do with April fools day- it was in the middle of NATION which some hotels give out instead of Bangkok Post

THAI flies to NYC ;)
Yeah THAI flies to NYC but I doubt they will do so for very long. the flights are 17 hours long!!! (they purchased the new AirBus, cant remember the model) Sinagapore AIR tried b4 and they pulled out after 2 months. I checked with some friends at THAI and they are experiencing the same problem. Low amount of bookings and the planes are barely half to quarter full. Hell for 3 hours longer and a short 1 hour hop in Narita you can save like 300 US$ for economy THAI is just trying to push to be more metropolitan (hence the I (heart) Siam posters for the "Manhattan" Condo. I lived in nyc and most condos look (or apts) nothing like that. and the large promotions at central for NYC.

Thai is flying a Airbus A340-500. Nice plane from what the ThaiAir folks told me with personal televisions built into the back of every seat and power ports as well for laptops. I would prefer to fly 17 hours direct from NYC and arrive at 4:10pm instead of 15+ hours to Tokyo or Seoul and then another 5+ hours on to BKK and land at around 11:45pm.

15+ to Tokyo???? more like 12.... what flight was that??? total flying time is about the same except for the stop-over + 1-1.5 hours flying... I totally understand the interest of getting there faster and more direct minus the whole hassle of having to re-enter a baggage check at Narita... but the stop over is pleasant... duty free... quick shower... good food... but on the other hand what is the most you have ever flown??? My max currently is 15...Atlanta to Seoul and I was about to kill everyone on board! trust me 17+ is very very long to be on a flight with stale recycled air, baby screams, etc... but hell to each his own... have fun on those flights... I too was excited being from NYC and having th luxury of returning home and seeing my friends for a week or so and returning one word.. even if you booked in advance THAI will still honor the tickets for later flights but you will probably get rerouted through Heathrow or Narita...

FROM TODAY's BANGKOK POST New service to New York faces turbulent start AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK Thai Airways International will fly through commercial turbulence for three years before starting to make money on its new non-stop service to New York starting on May 1, a study says. The study by THAI on the highly publicised service found the airline would suffer losses until the 2008-9 fiscal year when the route would start to make money, according to a source at the firm. The airline would lose 4.37 billion baht in the second year, falling to 33 million baht in the third year, a THAI source said, citing figures in the report. But the service would turn around in the fourth year when THAI was expected to make a profit of five billion baht, increasing 5% a year after that, the source added. The study was based on expectations that the Bangkok-New York flights would be 72% full. One problem worrying THAI was declining passenger numbers on inter-continental flights between Asia and North America, according to the source. More than 10 million people a year travelled between the two continents but the number has declined since 2002, the source said. An official involved in the air travel business questioned the commercial viability of the service, saying fewer than 200,000 passengers travel between Thailand and the United States a year and the trend was on the decline. THAI will use its new Airbus 340-500 jetliners on the route, flying six days a week. The Bangkok-New York flight will be the first time THAI takes passengers over the North Pole on the Polar Route. THAI will be the second airline in Southeast Asia using the route, after Singapore Airlines. Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AeroThai) has studied four potential destinations on the Polar Route, including Washington, Toronto and Chicago. THAI president Kanok Abhiradee dismissed the study and said he was confident the New York service would do well. The service would bring the carrier into direct competition with Singapore Airlines, which also offers a non-stop service between the two cities. THAI says that with 17 hours of flying time, the new Bangkok-New York flight will be the fastest service between the cities. ``I am confident about the business potential of the Bangkok-New York service. With the advantage of a shorter flight time than Singapore Airlines, I think we can take a regional market share from our competitor,'' he said. Mr Kanok said THAI would assess the new service after three months. The service was in line with the airline's plan to expand its footing and attract new customers. Vasing Kittikul, executive vice-president in charge of commercial affairs, said the route mainly targeted first class and business class passengers and aimed to lure travellers from Hong Kong and Singapore.
