Yep, she married him.
Thailand's love affair with Pui began when she won; it wasn't hard because she is basically an American who had done many beauty contests; whereas in Thailand pretty much most Miss Universe contestants have done/won few major contests before, and are only allowed to compete once; whereas in other countries they can enter many times. Plus, the Miss Universe format favours english speakers.
So, when asked, Pui knew to say stuff like "chun rak dek" and so on, which wowed the judges; hell she was good enough to win the whole worldwide thing with that sort of rubbish.
Bear in mind that the only way someone can generally win a major contest is with a major sponsor behind them, to get them primed - same as most other major beauty contest countries. So, Pui was better primed and prepared than most, and she looked good back then, especially to western judges.
Sadly, thereafter, she proceeded to give everyone a great laugh with lines like, "buree mai dee, buree bpen yah sep dtit tum rai hai kon rop kahng" which she said was "buree mai dee, buree bpen yah sahp dairt" and "Bui chorp pah mai mahk" became "Bui chorp pah moi mahk" and "Bui tum ngarn nuk lae muay mahk" became "Bui tum ngarn nuk lae moi mahk" etc etc. As you say Dotcom, yes, highly embarrassing for her, but also highly amusing!!!
I am pretty sure some of my entertainer friends made up anything said wrong in a farang accent for Thai and attributed it to Pui.
She also made Thai people dislike her more with her moronic behaviour; but then again she never really considered herself Thai, so I suspect she behaved the way of many spoiled Asian American brats, and disappointed quite a few people in the process.
Her mother used to shop at the same market nearby my house; what a gold digger.
Other Thai Americans who have been beauty queens and then screwed it all up:
Pop Areeya - stole someone else's last name
Helen Pathumwat - married a dweeb who had got rich by divorcing some hi so girl, set up a BMW dealership which then went broke, now back on beauty circuit - big boobs though 
None of these 3 can even speak proper Thai!!! Half the key to winning the miss universe, be full of crap and sincere - I think english speakers just can pull that off better.

Man, guv got way more cash dan dat innit. So he can afford it.
He looked like a right twat at the wedding reception though; Bui milking the Thai media for all it is worth, and then turning to her hubbie and explaining to him what is going on; he honestly looked like a typical farang kee nok with the bar girl wife - with all that money you would think he might at least manage to not look like trailer trash, but I guess money cannot buy everything.

Honestly!!! She said all of these things! She is now a standing joke in the entertainment community - plus she is really stupid... imagine a valley girl, well that is pretty much her. I remember attending a Maynard Ferguson concert - one of the greatest jazz trumpeters and leader in the big band bebop movement..the King in attendance upstairs.. he had his jazz band on stage, and she said in her twangy American accent in english "let's welcome Maynard Ferguson and his wonderful brass band" -
- brass band = matching band = NOT jazz

Her mum actually must live somewhere near my old place, because I used to see her quite often buying all kinds of food. Not exactly super hi-so.
It just goes to show, that beauty and brains really are a tough combination to find.
