I prefer to always wear dress jeans and a nice shirt,, I could claim I do this to impress,, but in reality I have those white chicken type legs that need hiding,,LOL.
As with most things I guess it is up to individual preference,,, but I do wear nice clothes especially in the evening even if just going out to a bar. I must admit wearing board shorts, a T-singlet and thongs into a nice club is perhaps more than a little down class. ( and I speak as an Australian ). THATS the other reason to wear dress pants,, hide the marks left on my ankle from the " ball and chain".
In the end who really gives a FUKC.

I'm currently vacationing in Frisco, eating at restaurants where people who make ten times my salary eat. I dress accordingly. In Thailand, I'm the guy who makes ten times what everyone else makes, but that doesn't mean I can expect to dress in shorts and not be noticed. In most of Asia shorts are only for kids, not adults. That doesn't mean I don't dress the way I want, but it also doesn't mean that I can expect the same treatment as someone who dresses appropriately.
Nuff said.

I wear what's comfortable and what mood I'm in, but I also have memberships to several places.
You probably won't receive the best service if it's your first time to any establishment. Alot of these places will take care of repeat clientle. If you want to receive more than the average joe, try offering the mamasan or papasan an incentive in the form of a tip. That usually helps with first timers.

I'll only ever be a tourist in BKK and whilst aware of the thai attitude to shorts and singlets, as an Australian who finds the transition from Melbourne spring, winter and autumn temperatures to the heat of Thailand a bit of a struggle (i can hack the heat but I sweat accordingly) to wear long pants would be just too uncomfortable.
But I think I do make an effort, dressier shorts covering knees and decent short sleeved shirt often collared. I guess the shorts wouldn't get me into some of the better night clubs but I haven't ventured beyond the gogo's and bars yet. And I'm probably not likely to.

Returning to the subject of the thread :
Personally, and this is only an individual preference, when I am being attended to at Poseidon or any other soapie or oily massage establishment, I choose to wear my birthday suit. Creased, wrinkled and marked it may be, but it's the only one I have...........until the next time.
As for showing respect and consideration, if I turned up at Poseidon and saw that all the ladies were dressed in dirty, sweaty, creased torn jeans and stained and un-ironed shirts or tops, I'd certainly think again.
Some guys look great in good shorts. Others do not.
Small soapies and small oily massage places may be O.K. to wear these shorts to. Maybe not, although nothing will be said to offend the customer with the wallet. But the wallet wont stop people from thinking.
But these big places that have karaoke, and restaurants, lounges, pool and maybe a floor show or disco are places of entertainment and socializing that are not of the back-street variety.
Isn't it a question of decency, consideration and respect as to how you present yourself ? This is not our culture or society. What is comfortable 'at home' for everyone, is not the same here.
Unless you are into humiliating a girl, I don't think anyone would enter a blow-job bar having not washed for three weeks. Likewise, if a guy has the possibility of 'networking', he isn't going to show up in casual dress
or beach wear.
The other consideration is that the ladies who are the service providers are, by the very nature of their employment and attendance, inviting you to be physically intimate with them. Being fully dressed, means that you have taken the trouble to protect your body against the filth, dust and pollution of Bangkok to be with her. These ladies may not acknowledge that, but I'm quite positive that they at some level appreciate the effort that most people take.
I do agree that you should wear what you like.
But I also think that when you dress, you have in mind just where you are going, what you intend to do and whom you might meet.
I've met my most valuable Thai contacts at soapies and the like, and I don't think that I would have secured their attention if I had been inappropriately dressed nor offered their choice of lady at their expense.
Just a few thoughts.
Ammunition :
I have been on a beach here wearing a tie as well as being fully clothed and climbed a mountai trek similarly attired.
I attended a wedding in the U.K. in jeans.
I have been a participant at a birthday party, where the only dress required was a black tie. ( hard to get out of the car to rush to the front door and get in quick enough.)
But apart from mad instances of fun, places like Poseidon call for a little bit more from me.

It is true that Thai's consider it to be rude to wear shorts, especially in large cities like BKK. Personally I try to respect the feelings of a country I am in where I am not a citizen, so I would not consider wearing shorts in Thailand. If an American said they wear shorts and don't care what Thai's or others think, we would never hear the end of it on this forum.
