I'm planning my next trip, and i've got this nagging feeling that i "should" go to a massage parlor this time. On previous trips i've stuck to beer bars and gogos. The only reason i can come up with is "because i should try everything at least once." other than that i don't see a lot of appeal in it vs. gogoland.
Here is my rationale:
In a gogo i get to see the girl with no clothes first, i get to talk to her before any commitment, if i choose her she is mine from that time until the next morning for 2000-2500baht (including barfine)
In an MP, i see her in a dress, i don't get to talk to her, and she is mine for 90 minutes (one pop for me.) and If i want one of the better looking girls it can cost up to 6300baht (poseidon, top model+surcharge) thats $146 US (not much of a bargain in my book)
Can someone please tell me what the appeal is? Is it the actual massage part? or are the girls that much better looking? or what?

follow your instincts. i once had the same thoughts as you. on my first trip, i went to a not so eye pleasing MP. and was turned off. but with so many trips following, i got kinda bored really fast. then i decided to give the MPs another chance because there was so much talk about it. and i am glad i made the decision.
depending on your confidence, you may be able to get the girl to come to your place after they finish work. (i usually tip when they come over). sometimes after they finish work (at 12 midnite usually) i meet them for dinner and nightclubing. i usually tip them when they leave my place about 1000B. and say its for their taxi ride.
Another good thing about MP's, is that you get to see them in light. which is better than the dark red lights in a gogo bar, which is very deceiving.gogo girls look good naked on stage, but when you take them back, sometimes they don't seem that great. especially the next morning. you'll also find that MP girls sometimes dress better when going out after work.
so, up to you.

As a non-MP type, I'd guess the main attractions are certainty and cost.
You get to pick the girl you want. In the bars, the girls you want may ignore you while you spend most of your time fending off the girls you don't want. On a bad night, this can be both frustrating and expensive.
Of course, some of us actually enjoy these little uncertainties - the thrill of the chase, as it were. Personally, I also find it important that a BG has the choice whether to go with me or not. I think I'd be a bit uncomfortable with the MP system where the girl has no option to turn down a particular customer.

afm171, you don't have to spend much to enjoy the pleasures of an MP. You could still go to Poseidon and pay only 2,500 B for the fishbowl girls. Go ahead try it out once. If you don't like it, head back to the go-go bars. Personally, I prefer the freelancers.

I do not have the experience base to suggest to you whether an M.P. would be a better experience than a Go-Go girl or a free-lancer .
However , if money and time are not too much of a consideration , then I do recommend that you try out an M.P. - if not for anything else , at least to know from first hand experience whether an M.P. is better for you or not .

I may suggest you better get some time to try both the MPs and the GG-bar scene. Seems to be that you read a lot so, GO FOR IT and enjoy!!
IMHO The model-type TGs are working in the MPs. Therefore, if you wanna BANG one of them you know where to go. Few GG-bars also have stunners. Attitude is a must cos will lead you to a nice BANGING experience. Have fun!

You gotta try it. Trust me.
There is so much variety in BKK. Gogos, beer bars, freelancers MPs and a whole host more. The variety is there to sample at least once, sorta like a buffet.
A relaxing massage, maybe a soapy and then a session on the bed with the girl is a nice afternoon experience to be followed up by the night time events of your choice. I do find the MPs to be a relaxing experience.
If you could go with a friend who knew the place beforehand it would take away some of the uncertainty. Enjoy..

I've always wondered if there is a clear untapped market opportunity.
There are options that are on the fringe of this, but don't seem to properly attack it.
The set up is:
--first, you do sauna/steam/hot tub. Just like in some of those pricey HK sauna/massage places.
--then, instead of sitting in some lounge in a robe watching Canto movies having someone beg to dig out your earwax for HK100, you instead go to something like a go-go, where there are girls suitably unclothed that you can make an educated decision, and then you have the fun of the mutual decision process. Also you can have a couple drinks.
--then you get a massage. And I mean a really good massage. This is something you get in those pricey HK joints - before the handjob.
--after or during the massage (usually during, when the girl "accidentally" massages too close to your fella, making him pay attention), a full-on session ensues. Maybe some oil slide, etc. Certainly BBBJ and full service.
--After massage, you are free to go back to the tubs/sauna/etc. Or go hang in the club area and watch the ladies shake their thing.
Challenge with this model is getting gals who can give a real massage and as well shake their naked booty.
Anyway an idea. This is in my mind an ideal set-up, but it may not work. They key is, how to mix a very good relaxing massage (I mean a real massage) with good facilities, good sex, and an opportunity to pick the girl?
