I have been hunting in Thailand for past 6 years. Just got my new one year non immigrant visa, so I will be here tasting ladies for another while.
I read the forum and discovered that most of you tourists come here for mongering really over tipping by extreme.
Many of you wrote you pay massage gal 500 or even 1000 for tip. That is very ridiculous. I will explain to you why.
In Thailand a university graduate working in office in BKK from 8 or 9 AM to 5 or 6 PM gets about 6000-8000 bahts a month. The normal wage for a college graduate in office work is about 220-300 bahts a day. In up country is even less, maybe 4000-6000 bahts a month.
So if you guys pay 1000 tip to a massage gal, you are actually tipping her a weekly salary for 1-2 hours of work plus her cut from the massage fee that is usaully 6-4 or 5-5 mostly in girl's favor. Thats another 1300 or so. So she is making over 2300 bahts for a 1-2 hour work. And thats almost a half month salary for an office lady in BKK.
Lots of these girls can make over 100000 bahts a month easily. And no need to pay a cent of tax. If you compare to a normal office or day time working girl that makes 4000-8000 a month, you will feel pity for day time working normal girls.
So a tip should mean a tip not a weekly salary. For us long time mongers we usually pay 100-200 for tip to mp gals. And sometime the girl do not perform well, we do not give a cent. Because they get a good cut over 1000 bahts out of the fees for a session already. 1000 baht is almost a weekly salary for day girls.
So I advise to tip the mp girls according the economic standard of the country. A 200 bahts tip is a long day of work for the day working ladies. Even 100 bahts for a good service is enough. If all of you over tip the mp girls and they expect more and more tip, all of them will be money crazed spoiled bitches.
So just remember in Thailand 100 bahts can be 5 bowls of rice dishes or 5 bowls of Thai noodles and its a half day work for most normal people both guys or girls.

people who tip well equalize cheap bastards like you. also I dont think its fair to compare girls who have sex for a living to office workers-do office gals have to have sex with almost any guy that cums along. if a guy has a good experience and wants to be generous so be it. it is not for the cheapskates to tell others what to do.

The standard is 500 baht for good service at soapy. The tip is already included in the "special" charge at a oily.
It would be best if people did not exceed that amount, because the TG's start to expect more if some people are tipping too much.
If someone wants to tip only 200 at a soapy, that is their own business, but it is not realistic to expect everyone else to follow. If we can hold the line at 500, then that will be good.
If TG's only earned at a MP the same amount they earned in an office job, there would be no MP's.

The way I tip the soapy girls are by their attitude and performance. If they are very GFE oriented, I would at least tip time 500 baht. If they are very good at pleasuring me, I would also give them 500 baht. But if they are both GFE and the session was very pleasurable, I would tip them 1000 baht. I have given many 1000 baht tips to soapy girls, but that's because they allow me to have 2 -3 pops within those 2 hours or longer then 2 hours.
Advising others how to tip is wrong. Maybe you just had bad services from soapy girls or maybe you are just cheap. I don't know your situation, but tipping is by ones own decision.

Agreed. This is not an office job, and one of the allures of the job is the promise of high wages, finding a foreign husband/bf, etc. It also carries with it the risk of physical abuse by drunk punters, STDs, etc. And a certain social stigma.
The ladies will take whatever they perceive they can from the would-be punter, lol, and in that regard, hankamazon's point is well taken: prices get inflated based on their perceptions of what punters will pay, e.g., many of the ladies on the ground floor of NEP are jaded because they are getting pulled by higher paying Japanese customers. So I don't frequent those bars so much anymore.
But I don't pay office lady (OL) wages for someone who is willing to share her body and a GFE with me. I have no problem with the 500 Baht tip, but, as said by Mr. Alan, try to hold the line there.
Also, consider a typical expense for me (if I were to do such a thing, given I have a TGF, lol) at a beer bar such as Morning Night might be: barfine=$500, s/t=$1000, s/t hotel=$300, drinks=$200. Or about $2000 Baht for the experience. The lady would get the s/t fee and a cut of the b/f, drinks, and potentially from the s/t hotel as well. So for me to walk into a place like Annie's and plunk down a 500 Baht tip is competitive with the Morning Night scene. And typical of the going rate.

I agree with hankamazon.
Tourists who don't do their research do end up over-paying and spoiling it for the rest of us. Over the years, i've read countless posts on this forum from guys who have been stung / conned / or thrown money at a girl only to feel they have been betrayed.
Lets face facts, to most girls you are just a busiess transaction, a walking meal ticket or at best a valued benefactor!
I'm not saying treat them poorly or without mutual respect but never forget that they are providing a service. After all, I chat enthusiastically with the bloke who drives the bus I get on every morning to go to work but I never tip him £10 a time !!!!

Tipping always a discussion point on this board.
It might be a point worth considering but it's not just the Thais who have a different culture we also have different cultures. You tend to find the Americans keen to tip much larger amounts and more regularly. Thats coz the US is a has a tipping culture, Europe does not and the UK only does a little.

It's not really a cultural thing, it more of an economic thing. Some workers in the US (waiters, bellhops, cab drivers, etc) get paid a very small wage (not enough to live on and usually below minimum wage) and they depend on tips to earn a living (or just survive). In the EU, the tips are priced into the cost of the meal, etc, in terms of higher pay to workers, so you pay either way.

Yep, but that is the point i'm making. whereas for Americans it would be culturally ingrained to tip (for economic reasons), and therefore perhaps even morally offensive not to tip (cheap charlie at the very least) in Europe the idea is a tip has to be earned not given. If service is great then fine a tip is given, if it is just average or worse then we don't feel obliged to tip.
After all I don't see an economic reason to tip here, these girls choose there work and earn many time the national wage.

I think that up to 500 baht is reasonable. 1000+ is a little excessive.
