LOS? Was ist los? Bei Otto ist los!

One of the dishes I miss most from Mom's home cooking is pork knuckle with saurkraut. Mom used to prepare it frequently, from a recipe passed down several generations, all the way back to the old country.

Amazingly, I even had difficulty sampling this delicacy on my last visit to Heidelburg. Thus, I was quite excited to discover it listed on the menu twice when I visited Bei Otto Restaurant this afternoon, on Sukhumvit Soi 20, across from Windsor Suites. Built to look like a Swiss chalet, with friendly waitresses dressed in Bavarian-style costumes, I knew I was in for a gastronomic treat as soon as I entered the establishment.

Tempted by the saurbraten, I opted for the Bavarian-style pork knuckle, in part because it included potato pancakes on the side. Imagine my disappointment when the order arrived with a substitution scoop of uninspiring mashed potatos instead. I was about to vehemantly complain to the waitress, but one bite into those tender morsels of meat made me forget all about it. There isn't much substance to the pork knuckle after discarding the huge bone and cutting away the surrounding ring of fat, but the meat that's there is absolutely succulent. Wunderbar!

After a fully satisfying main course, I studied the dessert menu. The strudel sounded promising, but where's the cheesecake?

"What, no cheesecake?", I ask the waitress.

"Yes, cheesecake", she replies, "in the bakery."

I'm prepared for a great finish, but what a letdown. This was, by far, the worst cheesecake I've ever tasted. Not only did it lack flavor, but it was so dry I had to order another stein of beer to re-hydrate. I've seen a good rum sauce with cherries do wonders for your standard store-bought variety, and this one certainly needed a lot more help than what just powdered sugar could provide.

Dispite the poor finish, I recommend this restaurant and plan on an encore visit for the saurbraten, with strudel for dessert next time. Fortunately, I came equipped with a fine cigar to top-off my meal.

Bratwurst 4ever!

Yummy, the old good German cheescake....I used to eat it on "industrial" quantity basis!
And all the amazing ways to cook kartoffels.....and my first German date, Andrea...what a psyco!
Btw, I recall reading a survery on the Spiegel magazine few years ago when I was living in Bremen, saying that the most popular food in Germany was the Turkish (kebab, rollo etc), followed by the Italian & McDonald's!
Anyway, Bei Otto got my vote as best German Rest. in LOS.....

Der Spiegel readers like McDonalds? Did enter a McD in Berlin once, only because it was the only thing open at 5 AM and I had to take a leak real bad. At least they had beer on the menu.

Well, bratwurst is still the number one food in my hometown: Milwaukee, Wisconsin (maybe better known for Harley-Davidson). Johnsonville Brats, made in nearby Sheboygan, are world renown. I even noticed a half-page article about them in the Bangkok Post during my last visit. When you attend a sporting event in Wisconsin, beer and bratwurst are a staple.

Sanook,

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind, although I haven't been in the Windsor Suites since they hit me up for a joiner fee last year. JW Marriott bakery is also very good for these tasty treats.

Yes, they have a smaller entrance right before the main entrance that takes you by the cigar shop and around the lobby bar to the elevators completely bypassing the front desk.

Have to say that location, rooms, service, and food are all great. The also have one of the best steak houses in BKK in my opinion. They also have a connecting skyway to Ploenchit Plaza. I'll be staying there (again) on my upcoming trip. 12 days and counting!
