Hi Paul,

Generally, Arabic is a language, rather than a food...I'm not aware of any distinctly Arabic cuisine.  That's the bad news.

The good news is that the Middle East shares a number of types of food throughtout the Arabic-speaking world: kebabs of various (non-pork) meats, salads, cheeses, grains and sauces.

An early evening walk up Soi 3 will put you in front of a dozen different sources of Mid East food: street carts sell shwarma (lamb or chicken, with vegetables and sauce, wrapped in pita bread), plates of kebab, with rice, hummus (garbanzo bean paste with spices), tahini (another sauce, based on sesame), tabouli (millet, parsley, spices in a salad mix), etc...

Be fearless, but calm, and ask someone to help you order.  Despite some claims of danger there, I have NEVER been uneasy, or threatened in any way, and have had pleasant words returned always.  Later in the evening, there is an eerieness about the area, and I have seen some nefarious looking girls beckoning people into the shadows, but common sense and self-preservation outweighed my curiosity

Just stick with populated restaurants, and well-attended street-carts, and you will do fine.

Oh, one more thing:  skip your hotel breakfast one morning, and try the roti sold on Soi 3, about 100M N. of Sukhumvit by several foodcarts.  Roti are round pancake-looking fried pastries.  You can get them filled with meat, or plain, with sweetened condensed milk poured on top.  MMMMmm. Just limit these to once-in-a-while, or those suits you bought may have to go back...

Also loads of Middle Eastern restaurants, food-stalls &c  in the lanes between Sois 3 & 5 - a small district between the Grace & Sukhumvit known as 'Little Arabia'. A very colourful part of the world, imho - worth taking a look just for the atmosphere.

Never felt threatened in any way there. Main hazards are restaurants which don't serve alcohol.

Go down Soi 3 to where there is a side street that goes off to the busy Soi Nana.  Don't go the end.  On your right an inn called Schiller's Inn, but on the floor level is a cafe called Al Ferdos.  Can't miss it.  Look for the portly, bald, and moustached Hassan inviting you to sit.  Order the Iraqi naan, lamb kabobs (mmmm, cooked over hot coals, and Arabic tea).  You will be happy, but just MYOB with the other guest.  They are there to kick back, but with the war and all, play it safe and fake a Frog or Hun accent.

Across the street is Al Husseins.  This is Pakistani/Bengali food.   You can eat great food, smoke a hookah, and watch Indian MTV videos.   Great atmosphere and out of this world.

You will see some of the sleaziest characters in the world.  I get a kick out of seeing all the Nigerian children riding their scooters in the stagnant and septic mud puddles.  you almost forget you are in LOS.

Paul, if you wait for me, we can go together

Sounds good and tea is on me.  My colleague here in LA and I always end up there at around 0400 and find the food to be particularly good at this time.  Do not waste your money brinign a TG here, just stick with the good ole Issan food.

Anyways, I will be there May 18 and let's the three of us get together.

By the way, where can I get a decent bowl of Ham Soup in Bkk?

Ham,  send my a message at kasiersoldaten@msn.com so we can coordinate with our Tommy friend privately.

I probably won't understand you either.  I'm from California and we have no accents, except if you are from South Central.

Damn, I'll be doing a project in the NE until June 1st.  Keep me informed of your dates because I really want to do a the Kachanaburi trip with a real Tommy.
