Price war brewing as sales start to slow : Facing a drop in consumption, Singha and Thai Beverage are taking off the gloves
=================================================

The country's Bt89-billion beer market will see intensifying competition during the rest of the year as brewers scramble to maintain sales during a period when consumption is expected to decline.

Consumption is expected to slow the most among low-income earners, the group least protected from economic difficulties.

To maintain sales, Thai Beverage Plc, the maker of Chang beer, is reportedly launching a fierce marketing campaign for its inexpensive Archa beer, which targets the low end of the market.

Archa beer sold to wholesalers and retailers in a bundle with liquors produced by the company.

Starting last month, four or five large bottles of Archa have been selling for Bt100.

Somchai Suttikulpanich, senior deputy managing director of Thai Beverage Marketing Co Ltd, denied a tactical pooling system was being used to push sales of Archa beer to its dealers. It is up to individual dealers for the most part to decide how they want to purchase the company's products, Somchai said.

"We sell our beers to dealers as we normally do," he said.

"It depends on our individual dealers in different locations to use or create any marketing tactics or promotional campaigns to boost sales and achieve sales target set by the company," he said.

Thai Beverage produces more than 1 billion litres of Chang and Archa beers a year at its plants in Wang Noi and Bang Ban in Ayutthaya and in Kamphaeng Phet.

Piti Bhirombhakdi, advertising manager of Singha Corporation, said purchasing power was declining in all segments but the trend would worsen among low-income earners over the next few months.

"Political and economic difficulties, including the rise in oil prices, have led to lower purchasing power for people in all segments," Piti said. "However, the impact on low-income earners will become more severe in the next one to two months as the higher cost of living sinks in."

Piti said that a decline in the purchasing power of low-income people would have a massive impact on the beer market as lower-priced beer accounts for almost 70 per cent of sales. The main brands in this segment are Leo, Thai and Chang.

"We saw 6-8 per cent growth in overall beer consumption in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year.

"However, we don't expect any growth in beer consumption in the next three months," Piti said.

Sales in the fourth quarter are unpredictable, as the political situation remains hard to forecast.

Singha controls 46 per cent of the market with its Singha, Leo and Thai brands.

Despite the 6-8 per cent growth in the first half, the full-year figure could be flat, Piti said, indicating that consumption could fall significantly.

The market will be flat or grow merely 1 or 2 per cent if the political situation remains unsettled and insecure, he said. Full-year consumption is likely to grow 4 to 6 per cent to Bt91 billion-Bt92 billion, he said. Last year the market expanded 8 per cent.

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 1 August 2006 :-

War looms in imported premium-whisky market
===================================

A barroom brawl is brewing in the local imported-whisky market.

Most of the major players are rolling out high-dollar marketing campaigns, and the losers - likely locally made whiskies - may stagger home with smaller sales than the rest.

Johnnie Walker Black Label, distributed locally by Riche Monde (Bangkok) is spending more than US$20 million (Bt757 million) this year to keep its leadership position in Thailand, its largest Asian market. Chivas Regal, distributed locally by Pernod Ricard Thailand, is spending nearly as much on marketing - more than $18 million.

And Brown-Forman Thailand, sole importer of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, is spending more than $1 million to promote the US blended-whiskey brand, which is far behind in the premium market compared with Johnnie Walker Black and No-2 Chivas Regal.

While consumption of standard whiskies has dropped 20 per cent over the past three years, consumption of premium whiskies increased 7 per cent annually, reports Euro Monitor, a market research agency.

Brown-Forman is hoping to gain some ground on its larger rivals.

"Thailand is still a priority market for us. The country enjoys a stable currency and interest rates and strong foreign investment. There are also 32 million potential customers in Thailand," said Alan C Anastacio, regional commercial manager of Brown-Forman Thailand. He said Thais' incomes had been increasing, giving them more disposable income and the ability to raise their social status. That means more people will switch from locally distilled whiskies to premium brands.

"We expect to sell more than 20,000 cases of Jack Daniels this year, and our volume sales are set to reach more than 30,000 cases [a year] in the next two years," said Anastacio.

He predicted Jack Daniels' sales would grow 20 per cent this year. The company's $1-million market budget is 30 per cent higher than last year's. "Our key strategies are to increase consumer interest by implementing relevant and exciting promotions - both regionally and locally initiated programmes. We also would like to recruit new customers to the brand through the improvement of our brand awareness and visibility, as well as educate the Thai consumers on the advantages of American whiskey over Scotch whisky," said Anastacio.

He said 500,000 cases of premium whiskies would be sold this year.

"We have now between 5 per cent and 7 per cent market share in the local premium-whisky market. Jack Daniels is also the leader in the 34,000-case American-whiskey market in Thailand, with a 70-per-cent market share," said Anastacio. He added that Jack Daniels had 2 million regular customers in Thailand. It wants to grow its customer base 5 per cent a year by targeting younger drinkers, particularly those in their mid-20s.

Anastacio said Thailand and Malaysia were the two largest markets for Jack Daniels in Southeast Asia, while the largest market for the brand in the Asia-Pacific region was Australia, followed by Japan and China.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 12 November 2007 :-

Boonrawd launches Isan beer
=======================

Boonrawd Brewery, the brewer of Singha beer, believes the launch of its new Isan beer will propel it into first place in the competitive beer market, says chief executive Santi Bhirombhakdi.

The new low-cost beer is targeted at the northeastern region known as Isan, which has seen strong growth in beer sales.

The market is dominated by Boonrawd and Thai Beverage Plc (ThaiBev), who each control more than 40% of beer sales. The companies tend to alternate as market leaders, depending on marketing programmes. The market value is estimated at 106 billion baht this year, up 11.5% from 95 billion in 2006.

Mr Santi said that intense competition made it essential for the company to maintain its market position. Its new strategy - introducing local beer for specific regions - is one that has proven successful in Europe.

''The battlefield in Isan indicates who is the leader in the beer market... because sales growth in this zone has risen continuously,''he said.

To accommodate the plan, Boonrawd's affiliate Khon Kaen Brewery Co in Khon Kaen has increased its annual production capacity by 25% to one billion litres.

Following the launch of the 4.7% alcohol Isan beer, the company plans to spend 35 million baht on marketing in the first three months. It anticipates Isan beer will earn a 3% market share nationwide and 30% in the Northeast.

Mr Santi declined to reveal the size of the region's market, but acknowledged that ThaiBev's Archa beer was the regional leader thanks to its lower price. Isan beer will sell at 100 baht for three bottles _ the same as Archa.

If I may offer some advice, I think you guys should learn to read the Thai alphabet. I really mean that. Especially if you're married with a Thai woman, with family, and intend on learning the lingo of her mind and her people. It would completely enrich your understanding 100-fold of all these odd sounds that you think you hear now--because your ears are yet untrained for all these strange new variations that are outside of the English phonemic range.

Just sit down and do it. Get a kindergarten ABC type book in Thai and have your lady help you initially; that's a good start. It's not that difficult, really! Don't be intimidated by its supposed size. Many of those characters are hardly used anyway. You'll get a good working knowledge in a few weeks, if you try. The rewards are plenty. The whole language opens up for you, and stops being a detective story in the dark.

Anyway, sorry to contribute to the digression of this thread, but I hope it helps.

PS As for the Beer War... I guess we'd just be looking at a few baht less at 7/11 if anything (if 7/11 is inclined to lower their own prices, who knows?). But for the Bars... probably no effect. I could be wrong.

Have fun.

Hmmm, I didn't think of that. Do you think there'll be any changes in beer price in Esahn or Eesahrn as well?
