I have for quite some time had a favourite whenever the hunger for pasta and italian food came over me. It is/was Contrazzi on suk soi 11. They had a very nice attentive staff and a very good chef. Actually I spoke to him several times as he came out to ask exactly how I wanted my fav pasta dish made! Great! They also had a nice trio of guitarplayers who for once did not drown the atmosphere with loud noise - just laidback nice background entertainment. Last month as I entered I knew something was going on because staff was doing an inventory of everything. It told me it was probably up for sale - even though they denied it when asking. But it was unfortunately true. My fav place is no more.... went there yesterday and was deeply disappointed. Gone is the great chef, as well as the philippino guitarrists. What is worse though is that cooking has taken a DEEEEEP dive! Thai cooks have read in the manual somewhere that salt should be added when boiling pasta. However not a kilo - rather a teaspoon someone should inform them. The dish I had was uneatable and told them to take it out and asked for another different one. Also completely under the ice. New staff all over and the different dishes we ordered were unfortunately something completely different to what it used to be. Very sad indeed since I really liked to go in there once a week or so! Goodbye old Contrazzi and I strongly advise board members to walk bye! Now I am totally without a good italian restaurant and that is a shame! Any advices are welcome!

give a try to Via Vai, at walking distance from your old fav restaurant. The proprietor of Via Vai also owns the successful Kho Samui branch, in Chaweng Beach. Yes, the chefs are Thai there but they're supervised by the Italian owner, the food is good by Thailand standards.

Dulio's 17 Sukhumvit Soi 49 Phone: (02) 258 - 7930 Excellent Pizza and Pasta and a friendly owner. They also have a silom branch but I've never been to it. They do home delivery too. Prices have gone up a bit lately and it's not a bargain but the food is great and consistent.

RTB, how can you say Via Vai is crap while recommending Pomodoro which is junk italian food? Pomodoro is a canteen serving tasteless italina food. Via Vai, Suk Soi 8, is owned by an Italian guy and has an Italian chef. Good selection of pasta. Limoncello, Suk Soi 11, just behind Contrazzi, has great pizzas. But very noisy when crowded.

I have also not been too impressed with Via Vai. Food is okay-ish, but the owner and some of the management staff come across as rather stuck up. Definitely not recommended.

Dumsy, you've got it right here... Antonio's is my favorite in BKK... bit more pricey though, almost like the very upscale “La Villa”, but worth every satang, and more cozy and original Italian in my books. You just can’t afford to go everyday… Another good one with real Italian chef, reasonable prices and friendly staff is “La Gritta” in the City Lodge hotel mouth of Soi 19 Sukh.
